Hi guys just wandered what equipment I would need for a 1day old foal ( I am getting him in December so he would be 4mnths ) ? Also what precautions I would need to take thanks x
4 months is extremely young to be weaning. Personally I wouldn't be buying anything from someone who thought it was acceptable to 'plan' to wean a foal that young, sorry
Equipment wise, not much. Decent leather foal headcollar, general stable equipment, rugs if needed (though I much prefer not to rug youngstock).
There are some good books, the 'Foal to Full Grown' one is good, so is 'From Birth to Backing' which is a Richard Maxwell book if I remember correctly.
ETA did you mean 6 months? That's a more 'normal' weaning age?!
Nothing much to add really to rhinos post, except if its a pony foal look into what transport its coming home in, the standard breast bar in a trailer isn't always suitable.
And handiest things are a yard with another young playmate, plus a steady older horse to nanny it.
