Hi

Very interested in getting a heart rate/exercise monitor for my horse.

Only thing that worries me is do they rub or move? The wire connectors etc seen to be a recipe for disaster!

Has anyone used one?

I have used a Seaver girth sleeve on the racehorses. If your horse is sensitive I wouldn't get a Seaver. One thin skinned horse detested it, he was on when it was on but he would serious protest at the whither pad going on and I couldn't wash that same bit down again after. The rest were fine with it. The cable is easily tucked in under the girth, mine jumped a circuit of Carlisle racecourse over the chase fences as well as many other hurdle and chase schooling sessions at home. Alongside the galloping. It doesn't rub more move, it has wee rubber prongs for lack of a better word on the girth and wither pad which is what the sensitive one doesn't like.

I do love all the info it provides you! Though I have not been gentle with mine and the heart rate bit of it stopped working - I can hear rattling in the unit so I am guessing that part has come loose as everything else works fine. It is still within it's 2 year warrenty so I really should send it back to be fixed!

I will try and look out some of the specs it gave when it did work.

So we set off it walk, it goes up when we trot, back to walk, back to trot, walk, onto the gallops. We cantered 3x up and down (yes we canter back down ...) increasing speed and power each time up so each red peak is the top of the gallop, it drops when we top, comes up a Little as we lob back down, drop as we stop to turn and repeat. It tells you the average heart rate, highest heart rate, how many calories burned etc.

Wow thank you so much! This is so useful!
I have a cob and getting her fit is really hard work....I thought the data from this sort of thing might be helpful and it looks like it really might be!

Before you spend £££ - what do you actually need to record?

Have a look at Equilab. it's a free phone app, and reliably records distance, speed, time spent in w,t and c, percentage left and right turns in each pace, bpm, draws a map, has a facility for you record notes,.....and more that I've forgotten. It doesn't have a heart rate monitor though.

Well I really want to use the data to help with getting her fitter....as I said above it's hard to get cobs fit. So I need heart rate.

Seaver is significantly better than Equilab. Its significantly more expensive though. I love mine. I found it incredibly helpful for getting my cobby pony fit for driving trials. I love all the data you get and I love being able to relate to how the horse felt. They are also constantly improving the software and adding new bits. I don't regret buying mine. The only quibble I have is that it doesn't hold its charge as long as I would like, but that's a minor niggle really

I’ve been looking into one of these, particularly since Equilab have reduced the info they show without subscription ?.

When you’re using the Seaver, can you see some of the info in real time on your phone? Eg distance travelled, time, distance in each pace (the stuff you can see on the screen whilst Equilab is in use) and/or heart rate? The sort of stuff it’s useful to know whilst you’re riding, rather than assessing it after and thinking, i should have done a bit more fast work/added an extra loop on the way home to get my distance up.

I’m tempted to look into the polar version as it has a watch attachment so you can very easily look at your watch (easier than pulling your phone out) but I don’t think it has half as many details.

Then there is equilog but it only seems to be for Android? I have an iPhone.

Thanks!

Yes I think you can see most things whilst in motion with the Seaver. I have never really paid it much attention to be honest as I have always had it out on the racehorses so have popped it on, put my phone in my pocket and ignored it til we were almost home.
