equitreck trailers

I have hired a couple of the equitrek trailers, I think one was the sport (?) and the other the treble axle. As for the horse area they are brilliant. However I didn't find them the best to tow, unstable when travelling solo. I was towing with a Landcruiser.

I have looked into getting one of these in the past and i decided that if i was spending £5000 nearly i'd rather get a lorry or a newer 4x4,my OH has towed them (showing off 4x4's and their towing power etc) as part of the job he does and he has many years of towing experience behind him and he said they were very unstable to tow,bit like driving a port a cabin!!!! That put me way off so i have decided on a Bateson or something similar as the suspension is very good on them compared to a IW's etc.

equitreks are expensive, i had one of the 1st ones, it was lovely but not that well finished off. Have to say it was expensive to have for the odd staying away shows. so gone back to ifor williams (but also needed the money for a new horse!)

never seen the carriage treka - but guessing you would need something very substantial to tow it.

I also found them not the most stable on the road and that really scared me.

I've done masses of research into them now as planning on changing to one at the end of the year. Basically it would seem that the older ones (anything over a couple of years old) were not brilliantly finished but they have tidied them up now and sorted out a few of the niggles.
Re the instability towing, I've been told be a few people now who have towed them that it is all to do with the height of your tow hitch. Because of the weight distribution on them (horses are further back compared to a trailer that doesn't have any front section) if your tow hitch is slightly higher then it makes the vehicle more instable....so depends what vehicle you are towing them off whether they are stable/unstable. Also obviouly if you tow off something that is only just up to the weight of the trailer, then that is going to be an issue - I once saw an equitrek being towed by a freelander....not a good idea IMHO.
There is a place near us that hires them out to try so I am going to have a go with the model I want before parting with any cash, but I think if you know what you are looking for and do your market research they can be pretty good. The fact that second hand ones are like rocking horse poo does suggest to me that people quite like them once they have them tho....

they are worth the money! brilliant trailers. i had the show trekka and have just upgraded to the star trekka. the living and horse areas are great, the horses travel brilliant in it.
i have never had any issues with it being unstable on the road, it has towed lovely.

before we bought the show trekka we did ou research into all the trailers and to us the top 2 were equitrek and batesons. i dont know where abouts you are but definitely go have a look at them. We went to the manufactuters, they hire them out and will let you trest drive them before you spend all that money on one (certainly not cheap but well worth it) We have had nothing but great service from Equitrek, highly rate them.
