Finally decided I am definitely going to put my horsebox up for sale and get a trailer instead for the rare occasion I actually venture somewhere. I have a 3 litre Range Rover, automatic, in case it makes a difference, will that pull an Equitrek trailer comfortably or would I need something lighter

Don't worry, I will get some lessons before taking a trailer on the road in case you're worried about my thickness in not knowing what is probably something I should know !

I have the 4.6 petrol Range Rover and tow very easily the big 5*Equitrek with 2 onboard so wouldn't see it as a problem. See if you can hire one for the day to make sure or check your technical data on your vehicle and on the Equitrek

i used to tow my star trekka fully loaded with my td5 2.5l land rover defender until it was nicked and it cope perfectly
just hope it gets returned to me

if not im off to buy another one

theres not many that are going from a box to a trailer but i did the same as you plan and i actually go out more now with the trailer than i did with the box

i have a show trekka or is it a space trekka (the one with the bunk beds) and my 2.5 litre mitsubishi warrior tows two 16.2s in it easy peasy lemon squeezy

until equi trek wheel fell off that is....but thats a whole different story!

I know it seems weird to do but I just can't get comfortable driving a box. Its an old Ascot Supreme and a very nice box with excellent living but I think like you I'd end up going out more with a trailer because at least I'll be comfortable driving my car. I feel so guilty that its just sitting there costing me money, at least with a trailer I won't see so many fivers draining out of it every time I walk past !

The heavier the towing vehicle the better. I would be more worried how you are going to stop the thing rather than pull it. I shudder every time I see one of those loaded to the gunnels behind a smallish 4x4. If you get into trouble on a downhill slope and the trailer starts to weave a heavier tow vehicle will be more secure on the road. They look really unsafe to me. Before you go and buy one, hire one, put your horse(s) in it and go and get the whole lot weighed. I think you will be in for a shock!

was driving along A road...heard a funny noise..looked in wing mirror...saw wheel bouncing off in to pub car park! fortunately it was the front one of the two so weight went on to back wheel and trailer didn't fall over. the axle had snapped. horrible equi trek people tried to blame me but turns out it was a dodgy axle. if you're buying one i'd buy through a dealer rather than from equi trek themselves as their after sales service isn't very good IMO- local dealer will have own reputation to look after...

I think you will find that a 2.5 mitsi warrior only has a towing capacity of 2500kg. If so you will be significantly overweight and VOSA and PC plod are getting very hot on overweight trailers round here

totally agree with you BB. thats why we got rid of our wagon what with the huge payout of at least £1k each year to get it serviced and plated iys far cheaper having the trailer. think it costs about £100 at the main dealer to have it serviced.

now this is not what i have experienced. ive had nothing but excellent service from Tom and his team. they have been there to answer my queries, more than willing to sort my trailer out and even did extra things to it and didnt charge me - they replaced the treads on the ramp as my big mare had trashed them with her loading problems, they replaced them without charge even though it was my fault and my horse had damaged it.
ive bought both of my equitreks direct from the manufacturers in Huddersfield and wouldnt go to a dealer.

thats good to hear...just goes to show doesn't it that people have different experiences...was just recounting my personal experience (i've had lots of other problems with my trailer too- i'm not condemning them from just one experience!! i now go to barlows and i love them there...they've mended everything!)

better get that checked out then...tom at equitrek was the one who told me that i'd be fine with my car and trailer combo....i have to say tho i've never had a problem with pulling or stopping...i've even had to do an emergency stop to avoid idiotic driver and it stopped no problemo, not hint of a snake or anything like that...

i cant believe from the experience ive had with them that theyve been like that with you. it certainly is a vast difference in customer experience

im glad youve found someone that gives you great service and sorts your trailer out for you.

which have you got ? the show trekka M or L?

if its the M, your trailer weighs 1280kg unladened, so if your 2 16.2hhs say weigh 1200kg between them you will be fine, however it does depend on what other items you have in your trailer.

Someone put this useful link up the other day here so you can check your Range Rover and check the weight of the trailer and horses against it.
