sooooo 6 weeks in now and shoe back on. The last bit was dug out over a week ago and hole has been stuffed with cotton wool soaked in iodine and dressed since, (as per vets advice).

So farrier came to put shoe on today and said that he ran hoof tester over and did get a tiny reaction when tested v hard...now I am hoping and praying that this reaction was simply due to the testers digging right into the area that has been weakened by abscess rather than any more lingering. (I'm hoping that one of u can reassure me with this?).

He is 100% sound on soft and as far as a can see not hoping on a circle on the hard (but I will lunge properly in the light at the weekend as its v hard to tell in the gloom).

Equiwelli came tonight- and after a couple of s**t fits managed to get it on. It is actually easy to put on, (well on a normal horse that doesnt freak out at stuff!). It is made of canvas so dont think it is waterproof as such but would certainly be better than standing in mud. It does seem quite secure as well....watch this space!

Any more updates from members of the abscess club?

yes mine has come, he's wearing that in the stable for the second night, I also wondered about it being water proof it says on there website it is but I don't think it would stand up to the terrible wet and mud we've all had recently.

I'm still turning out in the day in the shire poultice boot because I'm hot poulticing twice a day , once I'm dry poulticing and the grounds a bit better will turnout properly in the equiwelli

how are you getting on with the welly? are you turning out for long with it? is the hoof that has got the welly on got a shoe on? just thinking that would make it wear through the boot easily

I have been practising with it in the stable as due to the predicted ginge strop at having it put on....I cant quite decide what to do at the moment. I havent out Ginge out yet. The problem I have is that he has become quite accepting of box rest and I wouldnt leave him out in it all day as i dont think it is man enough for that. So I am thinking that if I start putting him out again now he wil decide that box rest isnt for him...i think i may give it another week and then try him in the afternoons for a few hours.....i dont think that the shoe will damage it on the soft gound too much tho?
