So much to the delight of the old hags at my yard, new man disgraced himself this morning, and apparantly tried to mount the other mare in the field

, so they got her in.

Neither myself or the girl that owns the other mare were there at the time, and neither of us have seen any sign of any behaviour that would indicate he is getting a bit big for his boots...So she arrived and was like oh my god I'm sorry she's mega in season today and is such a tart, and i was like, i'm sorry I have a bad horse!!

We put her back out with him and they grazed for a bit, then she was like 'oooo man, come here', and yes he did try to mount her, got up but then blatently didn't have a clue what to do next so got straight back off, then they just went back to grazing. So we have put her in with my mare (who is in a penned area in the field for restricted grazing), and they are all fine and grazing happily, and we will see what they are like tomorrow.

It just seems to be that she is mega in season and gagging for it, and he happy to oblige, but then didn't actually do anything! Thank-god! Up until today he really has been fine with both mares, no herding, absolutely no colty behaviour at all, an absolute gent.

So half the yard thinks its the most terrible thing in the world...but myself and her owner are ok with it as we seem to think its just normal horse behaviour (our pony gelding tries to mount my mare occaisonally, apart from is too small to actually manage!!) and in a couple of days she will be out of season and all will be fine.

Are we both completely deluded, or is this just what horses do?? He is 8 and was cut at 2, so I wonder if its just leaned behaviour for him. And she apparantly has had other geldings mount her, so is perhaps just the biggest tart in the world!?

A friend used to have a gelding who would stand for hours 'pleasing the ladies.' Wouldn't have thought it was learned behaviour if he was gelded at 2 though, doubt he got much action before he was cut.

As long as there's no aggression involved, does it really matter?

Well we are not too concerned, but its a massive deal for the old hags on my yard!! Its only been today that she has been asking for it, and so the first time he has done this....

You know what its like when everyone starts ranting on about something you get rather paranoid....

Oh stuff the old hagbags, let them moan away all they like, but be prepared for him to be called a rig by them. Gives them something to talk about anyway...

In my opinion it is perfectly normal behaviour with a very tarty mare about (if unfortunate). My lad mounted a randy mare 3 years ago (she was begging for it, and went through the fence to get to him), he now lives with a very non-mareish mare and simply wouldn't do it to her (she has had a foal, so knows all about the birds and the bees if you get my drift).

As long as the owners of the animals concerned are accepting of what's happened and dealing with it, then I don't really see what business it is of anyone else. I'm sure that won't stop the old witches from trying to stir up trouble though.

oo er!
my horse does this.. and my last one

LOL!!

We are both ok with it (its just ours in that field)...I thought my mare was a tart, but she swishes her tail at everything, and he's not interested in her when she's in season, whereas the mare today was well backing up for him

.

All is fine and peaceful this evening, he's grazing, the 2 mares were grazing in their pen, she came in for the night and he didn't even come over, just carried on grazing....but yes clearly he is now a rig

!!!

edited to say, we are going to give her a couple of days to 'calm down' then she can go back out in the main field with him, hopefully they will go back to grazing buddies, and forget all about their love affair

Hehe, Pedantic you are so right...
Anywho, I have just come back form three months in South Africa working at a horse safari company... and some of the mares were total tarts, on one memrable occasion Demi dragged the YO off the trailer and then promptly jumped the fence to get in there with GundaGunda (her boyfriend) who promptly mounted her, whilst all of us were rolling around with laughter...
So i think you are right not to worry, as long and no one gets mounting injuries I think it is fine...

As the other posters have said, as long as neither horse is injured who cares?
