Hello lovely lot,

I am just after a little worldly advice. My little 4yr old won't wee when I'm riding. She won't wee with tack on. She wont wee anywhere other than her 'patch' in the field. But recently this has been causing probelms as she is a budding competition horse and when she is out for a day she will hold it in and she nearly bursts! This evening I just took her for a longish hack and she obviously needed a wee but wouldnt go. It was dribbling out!! But she held on. Then she would wee when I was untacking or anything, but as soon as she was in the field, she scurried over to her 'patch' and weed. The other day at a showing show she was a diamond for the first class (10 am ish) she then had a break untill her next class about 2pm and she was tied up to the box, could of course graze and had water acces, and took use of these, but never weeed. Then when I got back on at 2 it was clear she was desperate. Wee was dribbling out and she was very uncomfortable and (understandably!) wouldnt focus! I touched her bladder and she nearly went skywards!

So it begs the question... how can I make her learn that it's okay to wee whilst being ridden / at a show / hack / other places!!?!?!

Thanks in advance!

Can you touch a mares bladder??

As for the situation, no real advice really. I guess she will HAVE to go at some point. Maybe as she gets older she will become more comfortable at being 'exposed' in public?
Maybe talk to your vet and see if they suggest any ideas??

Ha, well I touched bladdery area!

And I guess I could chat to vet. Just seems rather odd. I have never had to 'teach' a horse to wee before!! I too thought she will just have to go one day, but she appears to have amazing will power!!!

Maybe start by say after a ride when you know she needs to go, taking her into the field with her tack on, and just holding out until she decides it's not worth waiting? Then she might get the idea in a place she feels comfortable, at least.

You could always try teaching her to pee in a bucket, and then just carry a bucket around with you.... (I know plenty of people who do this with their horses to save shavings!)

I've heard of people teaching horses to pee in buckets too, so they go 'on command' at shows! Takes a great deal of time and patience I would imagine though

I have taught my mare to pee when I whistle at her - which is great for when we are out at shows - I just find the nearest patch of grass and whistle, and off she goes!!

Its really easy to teach them - whenever you see her weeing on her "patch" just whistle at her, even if you are across the other side of the field! Once you have done this for a few days (so she has the idea of the whistling!), I agree with Sol - take across to her patch and wait for her to pee with her tack on. I know my mare is quite fussy about where she wees, and she will refuse to go if there is sufficient grass coverage for her liking, to prevent splashing!! :) :)

Also - is she in season? I find my mare does get more fussy about when and where she wees when she is in season.

Ohh, good suggestions thanks! I shall take her there with her tack on next time shee needs a wee.

I would LOVE for her to wee on command - how awesome would that be?!?!

And, no, she isn't in season.
