So the vet has advised us to rectally worm our horses with ivermectin based wormer.... :o
Anyone got any tips as none of ours have had anything like this happen to them that I know of and I think the little pony may try to kill me :o

Eeep! :(

It should really be much the same as taking their temperature, most will be tolerant if approached carefully and certainly not get too stressed or difficult, if they are happy to get wiped with a damp sponge just try putting a finger inside gently, a little water should make it easy then use the syringe and apply the wormer, the person holding should stay on the same side as you and you should stand to one side with the tail firmly in one hand.
The idea is that any worms that escape the internal wormer will get a dose when they come out and that should finish them off and break the cycle.

Agree with this. My mare was wormed at both ends when she had pinworm. You can either use a finger or pop the syringe up there

Yes it's pinworm, been a bit of a nightmare getting it sorted - long story :( Thanks folks, they've never even had their temperatures taken rectally with us so it could be a bit of a difficult day :/

That's interesting as my lad has shown signs of pinworm. He has been wormed and apparently he's stopped passing worms in his poo but he is due his normal dose this month - is it worth asking the vet if it should be done rectally or should I assume he's all clear now?

We were told that pancur 5 day and then eqvalan after that would work and it seemed to, the itching stopped, bums cleaned up and no worms were turning up occasionally in poops.
Unfortunately we're 3 months on and they have come back, turning up in poos and itchy, manky bums again :(
Contacted the vet and she said to give them the correct dose for their weights and then another half a tube rectally. It might be worth asking your vet about it :)

I would try massaging the area gently with rubber gloves, to suss them out. I did this with my mare before applying wormer rectally.

Turns out the dirty girl loves it and quite enjoys having wormer shoved in her rectum. There's no accounting for taste!!! O_o

Those of you with a pin worm problem, if you can wipe all around the anus with some vaseline every day - they don't like it so can't lay their eggs. Even baby oil on a cloth and wipe well around the outside where the eggs get laid. Baby wipes are great for cleaning the area first and then any dislodged eggs get thrown away.

Good tip about the vaseline, thanks :)
Ours are all ok with having their bums cleaned, at least there were no major strops about it anyway :) My poor gelding was a bit confused and sucked his tail in as close to his bum as it would go ha ha!
