I feel for you. I had the same problem with my big lad.
I dont know why he started to rip and go but it was after I had an accident and other people had been turning him out. By the time I was up and about again it had become established behaviour.
I even had a well known " behaviour expert" out at a vast amount of money as his behaviour was downright dangerous as you never knew where he would rip and go - only that he would just suddenly go 0 - 60 in a straight line. Only turning out though - never just leading (strange)
A client of mine gave me her stallion ring to use on him - she said it would stop an elephant and it worked!
I was told to clip a lightweight lunge line on he front and use no pressure at all. When my horse went the first time he hit the end of the lunge line and although the force pulled he line from my hands he stopped. He tried to go once more when I went to take the stallion ring off but again he hit the end of the line - no pressure from me and stopped.
I used the stallion ring to turn out for about 6 weeks and he never tried to go again. After that I always had him in just a lightweight rope halter and never had a problem again.
