Yet another total numpty question from me I'm afraid

I think Murphy should perhaps wear some boots for jumping??

Especially when we go out jumping the logs that have just appeared in the field next to the school

He seems to have big strong legs, most cobs do. So i'd just stick some brushing boots on the foot just incase he gets himself wrong and knocks his front legs.

You can get cheap simple brushing boots from your local tack shop - they're all you'll need for your day to day workings.
Something like this would be good : http://www.robinsons-uk.com/products/Pro...03401#sku.54135
take your pick. The requisite ones would be good as they have double velcro so are less likely to come loose!
My pony's work boots [and the horses in fact] came from second hand tack shops

I'd go against that advice - get tendon boots, you cannot support the leg, but you can stop tendon strikes. Buy the ones with support at the back and shaped so it doesn't dig into the back of the knee. Price makes no odds, although Dalmars offer the best strike protection

Cob or not, if they land and strike a tendon you are in doo doo

I put brushing boots on Sen when we go out hacking as there are quite a few logs that we jump too. Better safe than sorry!

You may want to try the Tesco ones (Beaumont Leys has them) as they are cheap and cheerful (£12.99 for the pink strap hi viz ones or £9.99 for the plain black ones). Mine get all muddied up but since they are thick neoprene, I just brush off the muck or hose them down if they get too foul. I've had mine since December and they are still going strong. Sen's a 14.1 Arab and I buy the cob size for her but they would fit a bigger horse as well.

if you must use boots tendon one might be a good idea, as cobs are mostly short backed when working fast or jumping they can strike thier fronts. I try not to use boots as much as i can as thier faff and can over heat the leg but like everything, time and place.

echo what CSJ says, brushing boots are to protect if the horse brushes. For jumping get something specific such as tendon boots or XC boots - far more protection in them for a specific reason - tendons!
Plenty of choice on the market too

Thanks folks, I knew you'd all be able to help

I will go to the tack shop this afternoon and see what I can find, but if I can't find any cheapy ones there I'll head to tesco

Thanks Pidge, CSJ and Ezme, will have a look for those, will they also protect him if he knocks his legs on a jump/log going over it? And do I need them for the front and back, or juat the front??

Yes XC boots protect all round the leg so they may be the best option for you in the long term as you can use them for XC and SJ

what is your budget like?
I've just bought Prolite ones, but NEW Equine ones are good too and I'm sure other's will recommend good XC boots too

Front more important at the mo than back, get the back ones next time you spend

Budget is...ahem...virtually non existant

needs to be as cheap as possible

Murphy hasn't really been persuaded to actually take off over many jumps yet - he doesn't dare lift 4 hooves off the floor at once!! But he is getting in to deep and I'm worried about him knocking the front of his legs

no 2nd hand horse shops, and was hoping to get some today (I really should be less impulsive!!). Perhaps I'll see what I can find in the tack shop, see how much they are there and then compare that to some online prices?!

There is Hurst Saddlers in Wigston (53 Moat street). That is my FAVE tack shop, she has loads of 2nd hand stuff but not sure if she would have boots. She's open until 6 on weekdays (shut on Wednesday).
