Are you kidding? thay are amazing, I find it really cool, if you dont like it, you dont have to open it. NL gets a lot of posts that dont attract everyone's fancy
Oh no, don't like the adjectives used at ALL! I just like being part of a new life coming into the world - I am always thinking *Do horses feel pain like we do*
Am I a bit sozzled? - Generally I will not open a post I find 'disinteresting.....' But what does that mean? I am playing devils advocate, cos for me it is is all a bit upsetting....however, - I am now keeping my big, fat mare, but it is not a simplistic decision....I love her, and hope this is a marriage made in heaven...but one will never tell. However, there we go, she is mine, I am hers and we are together...if a bit pissed... what do you fthnk?....
The birth of a foal should be private - like one of a human. They are as unlikely to have complications as we are...for Christs' sake, everything has been medicinalised, we have women miscarrying at 6 weeks thinking their life is over. Why do we not teach the rudimentaries of sex to our children....? I am not an arsehole... today my 10 yr old learnt what a minge was and giggled - am I weird?...' Where is sex education heading today?....
I do not think they feel pain like we do... My mare hobbled from field to yard with smashed splint bone....as you know I came off before Xmas-if you had asked me to do the same the reply would have been very much to the point...
And no... entonox and ORAL tabs DO NOT WORK!!!!!

I think these foal cams are great, and that we are actually lucky to get a glimpse into other people's stables and moments of real excitement. As for privacy, I have watched a lot of camera foalings and am so impressed with the way that Phantom was left to get on with the business in hand without unnecessary interference. I saw one last week where practically as soon as the hooves were presented there was someone there fussing about and tugging the foal out. (Of course, there may have been a reason for it)
My daughter saw Phantom foal this evening and was fascinated, she thought it was wonderful. I can't think of a better, more natural way for a child to learn about birth than watching an animal, the sex side of things she knows about, which is why I now have 6 rabbits!
A baby born privately into loving parents arms is a wonderful experience. I think a foal born is beautiful, but the mare should be left to get on with it alone - she knows there is a camera on her, despite what you think! The camera should be there in case of problems, not for all to gawp at. I feel as strongly about this as i do about washing my mares intimate bits without a song and a dance! And NO, I am not a perve.
My daughter was a C-section (breech birth) and I feel no less cheated than one of these wholly mother earth types.....
I can't see that a horse knows that lots of people are watching her though, and if she felt anything like I did during birth she probably wouldn't care. I asked for no students to be present during labour, but when push came to shove (we had problems) the whole flaming hospital staff could have walked through my room and I wouldn't have given tuppence. As a nursery nurse who has worked in maternity wards I have every sympathy for expectant ladies being poked and prodded by all and sundry and believe that they have every right to as much privacy as they desire and is safe for their infant.
In the foaling this evening it very much looked to me as that mare was asking her handlers for reassurance in a frightening situation for her as a maiden.
No offence taken!
I do think that horses know WHO is around them and when. We have known horses not to labour when the yard is busy and to wait till all is peaceful. An experienced handler is aware when to keep out of the way and when to be available!
As with 'humans' cameras have a place, and ultimately, what matters is the safe arrival of the baby.
Surely common sense is tantamount?
I agree that a mare should be left alone to foal when possible, with minimum interference and only have help when necessary. I also think that mares would deliberately wait until it is quiet at night to foal, which is why they seem to appear magically overnight! But, come on, I don't think that a horse would know that there's a camera on her. They have no concept of what one is and if it has been in her stable all the time she is not going to take any notice of it. I am not trying to be offensive here, just pointing out that a horse has no idea what a camera is, let alone take time out of foaling to be bothered by one!
