Well it appears that it isn't one :) Flick was put on a course of antibiotics, the toe went down in size over the weekend. Took her back to the vets on Monday & agreed to amputate the toe today as although it was better it still definitely wasn't right. Toe continued to reduce in size.... took her in today and agreed with the vet that was no reason to amputate:) :) :)

She is having her teeth cleaned anyway today so he is taking a quick X-ray, but it would appear that I was completely panicking about nothing.....

Not like me at all of course :D :D :D Phew!!!!!

Phew, thats exactly what I did though, turned out to be a little thorn that had buried itself, caused a swelling and looked exactly like a tumour. He had had 1 removed before so I was totally convinced I knew what I was dealing with, Wrong with a capital w. You cant help but panic when you love them though x

Thank you all :) :) it is such a relief (although of course my mind is still doing a minor worry about what the X-ray might show, whether the teeth cleaning will go ok etc etc...) but hopefully all is well :)

Hi
Fantastic news I am so glad for you, I read your first post and decided not to say anything because I had a labrador that died of a mast cell tumour a few years back and didn't want to add to your worry, nasty tumour sometimes. We always prepare for the worst and hope for the best......once again great outcome.

Great news!

Don't know about sober for October - no googling November seems like it will be a better shout for your health :p

First thread I've checked now I'm home! Very, very glad to hear this. I wonder if something was irritating it? Dr Brig 'irritated' (licked!) Bear's cut leg all night and it swelled up so much the vet wanted an x-ray! Silly dogs!

The Small White Thing is home :) :) A bit bleary eye bless her, but she ate her tea with gusto and is now fast asleep :)

CT you are right - the x-ray was interesting, it showed a new bony growth on the side of the toe. The vet said it was likely to be a reaction to a foreign body OR a reaction to a small fracture - there was no evidence of any bone infection, the bone showed white on the x-ray rather than black if it had been infected, and he said there was no evidence at all of it being a tumour.

Her teeth cleaning was also super-impressive, as is common with greyhounds her teeth were absolutely disgusting and covered in plaque and yuck, I had expected multiple extractions but she had one small tooth out which was of no consequence and didn't even merit antibiotics or anti inflammatories!

I have to continue to monitor her toe, if the new bone reacts to the toe bone and flares up again then the toe will have to come off - I had to equate this to horses, where I have heard of quite a lot of similar examples? It will be expensive if the toe has to come off (I nearly swore then but I keep getting infractions for that!!!!) but I am not worried any more..... yep Alec, I have that little glow like the ReadiBrek kid :D

So possible future flare ups? Bit of a pita, that, tbh, cos we've had similar with the big dog and bony growth spurs on one toe. He was horrendously lame on it a while back, but at 14, I'm reluctant to put him under. He's always coped fine but now he's not so steady and the back legs are wobbly, the front toe is more of a pain. He's on constant Rimadyl. If I could change the past, I would probably get the toe removed, purely so it didn't bother him again.

I imagine you'll be having a big chat with the vet again at some point. I think it's worth the money to remove it.

Yep the moment there is any sign of flare ups the toe is off - Flick came through the anaesthetic well today but I'm reluctant to put her through another unless it's really necessary & it will definitely only be one for that toe!

Well, firstly, the best news, so phew :) And next time (as you know there will be), remember this is known in our house as 'Worry of the Week'

This is an irrational fear, founded on three scraps of 'evidence' and turbo charged by the Google monster. Much like psychological Chinese Whispers, just to keep you awake at night.

Mine is currently the miniscule (and I really do mean microscopic) dot on the whippets eyelid. Its obviously a time bomb waiting to happen, and as a neglectful owner there should be tests, surgery, therapy!

Or maybe its the worlds smallest scar from when he cut his face that time.........!

Paisley I love this - I identify with 'Worry of the Week' completely :) Flick continues to be happy, skippy with a very normal toe (which is subject to close scrutiny every night) so I shall try and think positively

In the meantime, every possible positive vibe to your little whippet :) I am sure he is fine really :p :) :)
