Mare came down with this on Wednesday night and still isn't eating properly. Has anyone got any experience of it and how long did it take them to recover.

It is burping. I also thought they couldn't burp as well. She was diagnosed by the vet. When she was diagnosed her sides were heaving and she made noises as if she was pain but this it has subsided in the next day. We took all her food off her for that night as advised by the vet. She is currently lethargic (four days later) and eating half of what she used to and just wondering how long it will take for her to recover. I am having a run of things wrong with her this month and this is a mare who is very rarely ill.

Hmmmm. Sounds similar to gassy colic. Sunny had an episode last spring - my fault entirely for moving a certified pig straight from sparse winter nibbles onto lush ex-dairy pasture. Stuffed his face and 3 days later went down with a nasty episode of gassy colic. Thank god he had started to shift it himself but Sunny's came out the other end as it were in some spectacular, roof shaking farts. An injection of Buscopan and he was nibbling his haynet again in 10 mins.

I'd be worried that your girl is still off her food after 4 days. Is she pooing ok? Gut sounds normal? Other stuff ok like temp, pulse, breathing rate, membranes not pale? Does she look a little colicky eg odd straining as if to pee, restless, up and down like a yo yo? What did the vets say? Is this what they expected? With colicky symptoms, I'd sooner get the vet out every day for a week for a false alarm than miss something critical. Fingers crossed - let us know how she is hun xxx

I can't get the vet today so will ring again tomorrow. She is slowly getting back to normal and getting perkier each day. It is just very slow. Last night she ate her hard food like normal (when she had been picking at it a few days previously) and had an extra section of hay. She is still pooing (although less poo due to less roughage) and peeing the usual amount.
