Escape Artist Ponies!!!

What about making the inside electric a little higher?! I don't know if this would be beneficial though, he might try and jump it get stung by the electric and not land safely.

Do you know WHY he's doing it? Sounds too obviously i know but is there anything he has in his stable that he wants to get at, maybe you would put it in his field?

As said above, is he trying to get to his friends? I think you can get 5ft high electric fence posts - would that height deter him? Is he scared of flappy things? What about tying balloons/carrier bags/ribbons/wind chimes or something like that to the fence to scare him away? Failing that, tie breeze blocks to all 4 of his hooves lol! I only jest....

He is out with his friends and happy to jump out and leave them behind, he has hay out with them so there is something for him to eat and he can jump 1.30m without really making a huge effort, he loves his jumping and has proved many times he doesnt need a jockey on board to help him, great when i'm competing but not so great when i dont want him to do it. the, the only thing that helps is not putting himout everyday but then he trashes his stable, and he's no youngster either he turns 18 this year but is clearly not feeling his age!!

My boy is also a bugger for doing this, the best way i have found is to make a second fence with electric tape (as you have) but the only way i can keep him in is to make it to wide for him to clear in one go but not so wide that if he jumps inbetween them that he can get enough distance to clear the post and rail if you get what i mean.
It works well for me and my boy will jump a 5bar gate if he feels the need to come in early

snap! 6ft hedges didn't stop him but thought he had grown out of with age....sadly not, his is boredom and making his own entertainment!! I used to have a pony where we just left the stable door open had the post and rail heightened to well over 5ft at some expense to watch him sail over it less than 5 minutes afterhe was put out! This is my second fence hopper and he is a right cheeky sod!

This works for mine!

It can be so frustrating, what works for one may not for another. Worse if the beggars jump too! I literally have to keep this mini behind bars, or stockwire, because he goes through anything else and almost got himself killed last summer because of his adventuring.

i used to have a welsh cob that flew over my electric fence (4ft) the over my 5 bar gate simultaniously :S.

i now have another welsh cob that just walks through fencing :S and not forgetting the original escape artist my lil appy mare who i have had issues with for 5 years as she comando crawls under electric fencing or sits on solid fencing (i have been thrown off previous yards as the yo found her quite content and fat in the barn many times or in the next field with a strapping coloured gelding

. I really do think i pick horses that are going to cause me problems with fencing they are a night mare at the moment there like a tagg team.

Sorry - I know this post is quite old but have you thought about tieing a bit of electric tape onto the buckles on his rug, that way when he goes over to the fencing he'l feel the shock of the electric when he pushes on it. He'll soon figure it out! x

Its hardly old when it was only posted yesterday evening. and my pony JUMPS the fencing so intentionally giving him an electric shock is not only bloody evil but also Completely POINTLESS

Sorry - im new to H&H and dont understand the Regard: 15/06/2007 HA thought that was when it was posted Silly me.

BUT .. you dont have to be so snappy!! And it is a good idea if someones horse runs through it! whats the point in having electric fencing to keep horses out when you think its "bloody evil giving them a shock?" When the horse has had a shock there not going to attempt to go through the fencing again are they! Then you can remove it off there buckles and that way itl stop escaping! And if your horse is jumping then fence then try putting the fencing higher .. I think you should change the fencing if you dont want your horses to have a shock tbh! .. Plus you have put a good post on here about horses escaping so therefore people that hadnt thought about putting one on is now getting advice from your post. Hence "Mistral_Shining" thinks that my idea is good because she has a horse that runs through the fencing!

[/ QUOTE ] - I totally agree gyspy girl! go you lol. if you think eletric fencing is evil, then why use it in the first place?
tongue.gif
