i have been watching escape to the country and they were going round an RSPCA centre, and in there they had retired police horses and retired carriage of wait for it the queen. you would thing both would have enough money to ensure there horses are well cared for after they finish there service.

it annoys me because there are genuine welfare case that need help but centre are full. i'm not saying they shouldn't help them but i feel that the services should make sure they are able to provide a suitable home for them after they have finished service. not dumping them on the already over burden charities.

ok rant over

Quite agree. Its the same for greyhound racing too. Breed lots, chuck them out when done and expect someone else to care.
Try a letter to Her Maj! She's the patron of RSPCA but , considering the awful things one reads about the RSPCA killing dogs with a captive bolt, I wouldn't want anything of mine to go to them, anyway!

I thought they had seperate retirement yards for retired police horses etc. I thought they never got sold, only loaned out etc. There was a horse on my old yard which was ex police horse and apparently it still, and always would belong to police and was sold on illegally.

It's not an RSPCA centre, it was a horses trust centre which is a sanctuary for retired horses. You pay for your horse to be there, hence why she said "over subscribed".

Edit: It annoys me when people make assumptions and jump to completely false conclusions based on false premises.

It was actually the Horse Trust - who care for retired working horses - they are not a welfare organisation - but do work with welfare organisations when asked to assist.

As for the keep of the retired police horses and army horses - I think you'll find that a stipend is paid annualy by those organisations to assist with the care of them.

When I was trying to find a retirement home for my oldie I was asked if it had "anything special" about it so they like to have crowd pleasers with an "interesting past" to pull in the funds from the public while the big bosses sit back on mega bucks salary paid by supporters.

Oh i saw this never crossed my mind about the money just that they were in a good home but you are right! I do hope the queen pays an annual fee for the upkeep.
