Looking for some advice on what to do when a stallion escapes.
My friend went away for a few days and asked me to keep an eye on her 2 horses, 1 mare and 1 gelding. They are kept on her family farm.
On the second night it was dark when I went to check them and they were running about with a horse running in the field next door.
Next thing is lots of squealing and I realised the horse was activity trying to get in and over the fence
I ran and got her Dad so he could call the neighbours and was concerned it might be a stallion. By the time we got back outside the stallion was in-between the 2 separating fences. We managed to scare him back twice but the third time he came over and just ran through the barb and into the field.
Chaos followed as he fought with my friends gelding and tried to get to the mare and all 3 of them running wild up and down. The neighbours then came and said they had rented their land out to someone with 6 horses..one being the stallion.
They said he was too feral to get a head collar on and the woman probably wouldn't answer the phone but they would try and get hold of her.
They all agreed to leave the horses where they were over night being that it was pitch black and sort it in the morning. My friends dad asked me not to tell her and ruin her holiday and he didn't want her panicking and driving for hours in the dark.
The next day, the owner turned up but was unable to catch the stallion who had by now forcefully covered the mare several times as well as fighting with the gelding.
I had to let my friend know so she came home today first thing to try to sort the situation.
The vets came out but can't inject the mare until the stallion is removed and attempts to catch it or sedate it with food were called off as it was too dangerous.
The woman won't speak to my friend and has said via the neighbours that she will come out again on Monday to try again to remove the stallion.
Meanwhile he is still constantly harassing both horses and forcing the mare.
There is no safe way to remove my friends horses as thier fences are not designed to be stallion proof and no one wants to risk him jumping out again and escaping.
The vets have said they can get someone to come out and dart tranquilize the stallion or another option is to shoot it as it's so feral.
I don't know what to suggest to resolve this issue and help my friend even though non of this is my fault. Someone suggested calling the police as it's unacceptable for the owner to just leave the stallion there for almost a week!
Any ideas or has anyone been in a similar situation?
