Hi All, My 17 year old connemara is currently turned out in a field up the road from the yard for a couple of weeks holiday nd the little sod has mastered the art of opening the gate into the next field and taking his chums for a stroll, and then refusing to be caught! on saturday he even went as far as to show them how to jump out of the field and led 3 of them home along the main road! if he does it again i'm diss owning him! anyone else have houdini horses?

My Fell Pony used to stand on the bottom rung of the wire fence(this was years ago!) and her head under the middle one so her and her field companion could get out!

Have you tried putting an electric fence pen by the gate so he can't actually access it to get out?

Take great care Moose22 coz there was a case recently of a well cared for horse escaping from a really well fenced field and causing a nasty accident on the main road. Even though the owner had taken all reasonable precautions, she still lost the case and was successfully prosecuted. Why is your pony escaping? Is there grass in the field? Other horses nearby he likes? Field mates he hates? No shade etc? I'd try to work out why he's doing it and then set about changing things for him or moving him to a safer field before either he gets injured or he injures someone.

My connie x arab has recently decided to swap fields. Luckily where she is they can't get on to the road but every day it's a game of finding which field she is in. She's climbing through the electric fence despite it being working and it hurts, a lot! Luckily my yard are very understanding and don't mind so I've decided to leave her to it temporarily and hope she stops again soon!
