Hello all!

If you were trained by/had lessons with an instructor who was also a close friend as well as a dressage judge and you found out that they were judging you would you withdraw from that competition or would you go ahead?

Thanks

I think i would withdraw, or go in as an HC so they could make you but it didn’t count in the class against others.

I don’t think i would feel right if i got placed. Although my instructor would probably be stricter with me than others..... :D

I'd still compete. They will be professional enough to judge you fairly and squarly against the competition.

It has happened a couple of times with me. My friend / instructor is also a dressage judge and I'm not going to not compete just because she's judging. She is fair and recognises that she would not be helping either of us by giving me better marks than I deserve because it will potentially impact on our performance and also her reputation.

Depends on the level of the comp. e.g. For something v low-key at your own yard, sure go for it. For something at a high level where you don't have heaps of other options or if there aren't that many shows you can get to again go for it. Ideally HC if it is just one of many and you have other choices though I'd guess.

It's a low level comp and I have NOOOOOOOOOOOOO chance of being placed so I really don't mind that she is judging me.

I just wondered how others would feel.

Go H/C. The instructor/judge can still see how her pupil copes in a test and it's still fair on everyone else.

I believe BD would expect you to go H/C in such circumstances.

Def compete as normal. There are a lots of people in the same boat as many judges also train. It's not like showing. The judge will be able to mark what's infront of them, not who's in front of them.

I think there is nothing to stop you going in and competing as normal, but personally I would do it H/C, so as not to risk your own or your trainers reputation should you do well. I recently witnessed a lady here riding a test under her trainer, and it wouldn't have mattered how well she rode/the horse went, the bitchy comments surrounding her score were very judgemental, and mud tends to stick in the horse world.

Hmm I don't think there is anything wrong with competing as normal... I'm sure your instructor will be very professional and mark you as she would anyone else... However, if you do well, people will be bound to make bitchy comments so if it were me I would go H/C.. but if such comments wouldn't bother you then go for it and enjoy :D

I suppose it could be a problem if you were to win and someone knew your connections with the judge, I know most people would still judge fairly but you know what some people can be like. I would rather go HC in the trainers classes to save any awkwardness.

This happened to me but with an instuctor who lives miles away and who i hadnt seen in a while. I didnt know til i was actually there and recognised her car who it was. I had to go in basically! My advice would be to go because its all competition experience but bear in mind you will probably be looked uppon favourably or more strictly depending on your instructor I would personally just see what you get compared to what you normally get. Others would do it if it were them so why not you?? If you get placed please dont feel guilty. Hope this helps, Good luck xx

Enter as anyone else would - just another competitor. If you do well it's because you were good on the day & not because the judge trains you, she knows how bad you can be as well as how good so give her credit for judging what she sees. If other people winge well that's their problem & maybe they should look to their own level of training.

What's HC?
