Etiquette in the school

I really should know this....

I was under the impression that when there are more than one of you in the ring be it in the school/collecting ring whatever, yoou should pass a horse and rider coming the opposite way left hand to left hand. That's what I have done up till now and never had any problem but maybe I have just been in the ring with some very forgiving people.

My YO insists that it's right to right. We've had some interesting head on's down the long side. He is insisting it's right to right.

Was just reading a post about what side to hold rein loops and it prompted me to ask.

Oh my god, I hope i've not been going the wrong way all these years. I'm almost sure I haven't but he has sown the seed of doubt now.

Please put me out of my misery. Thanks xx

I have also been told though that lateral work takes priority. So, if somebody is coming down the long side in shoulders in and you should be on the outside of them, you move in so they complete their movement.
Also, if you are just walking, take an inner track.

Ooh, it can be so complicated, hence I ride alone :D.
 
Hoorah, thank you very much. I blooming knew it but he was SO adamant that i'd got it wrong that I started doubting myself.

I thought that perhaps right to right was just what they do out here and said as much but he looked at me rather pityingly and said 'no dear, right to right is correct worldwide' he should know, he has competed all over.

Nice to know I had it right although he's a fierce old b*gger and so will have to keep my smugness to myself.

Yep, that was my understanding too. I LOVE having the school to myself for exactly the same reasons.
 
Left to left. Definitely.

Some people do confuse left and right - has your YO ever tried to give you directions somewhere and got you lost as well ;) ?
 
Ok RS owner to the rescue !

School rules will differ slightly from yard to yard the basics are always the same. But here are ours and the basics that everyone should ride too !I have never heard anyone passing right to right in all my 30 yrs of teaching !

1. Always gain permission to enter / leave school
2. Always pass left to left
3. Slower pace always takes the inner track if working on the same rein.
4. Always halt away from the track and if adjusting equipment halt on the 1/4 or 3/4 line
5. Lateral work will take priority until the movement has been completed.
6. before jumping always gain permission first from other users and establish a direction of travel.
7. No personal headphones.
8. No dogs
9. Clear away all equipment after use.
10. Remove all droppings promptly
11. Smile and have fun

Just to throw a spanner in the works... does he play Polo?

Polo yards pass right to right (stick to stick).

Most yards base their guidelines on dressage etiquette which is why most people pass ride left on left.

Absolutely spot on..... good manners cost nothing.
 
I can never ever remember which way it's meant to be - I think I need to get a horse tattooed on my left hand to make me remember!

I've always thought that slower pace takes inside track when passing someone else, regardless of whether you're on the same rein or different rein.
