Well perhaps I am from the old school, however I was always taught to walk passed Walkers, Cyclists and most of all, other Riders!

Also if you catch up with another Rider, then you ask permission to pass and then once passed, ask if it is ok if you wish to trot on

Is there a different etiquette applying to Endurance Riders, who you may encounter out and about, even on the roads?

For the third time now I have asked a particular Rider, to walk as she approaches me and my horses in very fast trot.

Today we met on a very sharp bend, with a car following her, whilst myself and my other horse were negotiating the corner, which is on a hill, with barbed wire to the left. It was obvious that Motor was excited by the horse coming at trot towards him, as he was bouncing around, eyes wide open and was rushing forward.

When I asked her to walk, she carried on and when I repeated myself, stating that I have asked her to walk before, she continued in her fast trot, retorting that I need to grow up!!!!

To say I was extremely angry and upset is an understatement! If anything had happened to Motor, I may have not have been responsible for my actions.

The problem is that although I do not often meet other riders, I am likely to encounter her again soon.

Rant over, however what are your views .... I really hope I do not regret asking though

How rude of that person

I, like you, always walk past others horses, it's just polite!!

Precisely, this woman sounds like it is actually her that needs to grow up! Suffice to say, I would have given her a piece of my mind

I always walk past horses and if the horse looks wound up I will stop to let them pass / get control back.

Terribly rude of her really not to mention dangerous, for me roads are not the place to create issues for other riders!

No, there isn't a different rule for endurance riders. This sounds like one inconsiderate individual and please don't assume all endurance people are the same. Fortunately I find most other riders are very considerate although I do remember some followers of the local hunt tearing past me in the opposite direction one day without any thought for me or my horse.

Thanks everyone, as you can imagine, this has really upset me

Seleste .... are you an Endurance rider by some chance? How lovely if you are, as this was something that I would have loved to have done on Motor, however, he was and still is, too fizzy for this discipline .... so we spent over 14 years, of our nearly 19 years together, riding on our own, or with my other horse for marathon hacks.

Anyway, more to the point .... she did say she is an 'Endurance' Rider ..... her YO says that she must trot everywhere when she is in training
confused.gif
. However in my opinion, that cannot be to the detriment of others
crazy.gif

Inconsiderate whatever she thinks she's training for.
A good mate of mine used to train endurance horses, she was groom for an top level rider in Australia. She said that they used to prepare the horses by walking, walking and more walking. Not saying this lady is lying, but I can't help wondering about the percussive effects on her horse's legs if she trots on all the roads.

shes the one that needs to "grow up"!!!! how selfish of her to do that!! but i regret yelling at a car on my 4yo the driver slamed the breaks on undone his window and shouted shut ur f**k**g mouth u stupid b**ch i then thought oh dear u silly little man and troted on then i hear a screach of tyres and i look behind only to see the guy, not to mention is little baby and wife, reversing at high speed up the road to get me!! i had no choisbut to kick my horse on and bolt up the road!!! poor lil horse! luckly there was a bridle path that i could have canted up if he came any further. my advise is to say sorry not being funny but do u no how sad "U" r. what the hell do u think ur doing, u dnt own the road!! soz im just fed up of people thinking there better than everyone else when they r not! hope nothing serious happens next time!! x

I think you need to speak to her, very calmly and quietly and explain that trotting fast past other horses can upset them and could cause an accident, being considerate to other road users, motorists, etc. etc. If that doesn't appeal to better nature I don't know what to suggest.

There are certain riders who like to fly around the countryside, have no concept of thinking that other people might have difficult horses.

Hi, I too live in West Sussex and I think I know the rider you are talking about as she has done exactly the same to me. She is very arrogant and selfish and I am afraid nothing will appeal to her better nature. There are quite a few like her around I am afraid. I too have asked her to walk when approaching me but she just ignores me.

very rude but doesnt suprise me.

my previous horse was sharp as hell and on 2 occasions we met a point to point lady who CANTERED past me on the road (!) causing my mare to loop the loop. on the 3rd occasion i shouted at her to please stop as my mare was rearing and felt like going over, she told me my horse was badly schooled if it reared!!!!!

Orangehorse ... I would love to be able to approach her and stay calm, however there are some areas where my emotions catch up with me and that would be one of those .... I wish I could be calm and do as you say .......................... but thank you so much for your suggestion

Well if she carries on trotting everywhere on the roads --poor horse wont last long.

But agree with you Eaglestone--it is only courtesy when you meet or overtake another rider to make sure they are OK before trotting on.

TBH having a go at endurance was spoiled for me by--people overtaking at fast trot when I was walking the last mile in--leaving my boy jogging on the spot, also a long legged Arab taking a very deliberate swinging kick at me when overtaking.
I do not think for one minute all Endurance riders are selfish--far from it--but there is an element as in all sports, who only consider themselves never other ''lesser beings''.

She sounds a complete nightmare. I think if I was in this situation I would call on one of our BHS Committee Welfare Officers who happens to be a retired policelady who can be quite severe if needed. I would buy her a drink afterwards! Maybe someone slightly "official" might get through to this bad mannered, irresponsible person.

.. I hope your horse is ok?

Good manners costs nothing.......One should always ask if other riders are happy with you passing etc. I have actually taken another route if I am in danger of endangering another rider and vice versa.......

I've had someone that walked past, then trotted on and sped off up the hill. Was bringing horse back into work at the time, so didn't want her to trot or piss about. Luckily Beany is well behaved. However it makes me realise then now when I am out on a young horse, if someone did that, I would probably be a bit screwed
crazy.gif

At the end of the day, I am sure most of us do not meet many other riders, whilst out hacking.

So when we, do we must be very respectful of those other riders, as like you, the horse could be coming back into work, or a young horse. It could be make or break and no one deserves to lose their confidence, due to a very inconsiderate rider

Oh don't get me started...some numpty wearing pink wellies cantered up behind me and my pony this afternoon. My pony was hopping up and down on the spot, obviously wound up by it and she proceeded to circle around me, looked right through me when I asked if she was ok and charge off into the gateway in front of me on my right. I was fuming as the end of my near perfect ride turned into a jig jog home...some people have no manners!

Ignorant cow......do you want to borrow my welsh cob and trot past her in full royal welsh cob trot???!!! I had one who used to barge past on narrow parts of bridleway, so one day I cob trotted past her whenthe path opened out and her scatty arab thing had a good old flid attack!!!
