Let's hope the vets win the exemption.Seems crazy when at a guess 80% + of UK horses don't end up as meat, and owners and vets are always more than happy to sign the passport as "not for meat" in exchange for a course of bute. If the system ain't broke, why are the EU trying to fix it...?
 
This is just one of the many reasons why we need a referendom on the UK EU membership... why did our parents and grandparents fight the nazis ??? what was the point.. we have had 100s of years of stable democracy and now we are being run by a corupt unalected bunch of europeans who have the power to override our laws and make up whatever hair brained rules they like and we pay millions in for nothing but shite ....

It's very annoying when the whole reason we were told we needed to have these expensive passports was so we could keep this kind of drug for our horses.
I can't see that banning bute does anything for animal welfare and with the passports options no risk of them ending up in the food chain.
 
What really bugs me is that we are implementing these rules as if horses were agricultural animals - that being the case they should be VAT exempt and enjoy all benefits of agricultural animal status.

I think we should opt out of the EU until they can get a set of accounts signed off by auditors - I believe we are now in the 13th year were they couldn't be signed as they are materially wrong. This wouldn't be allowed in a company, so why is it ok for the EU?

Outrageous, my passport is signed that my horse is not for comsumption so if he needs bute he should have it. Surely its a matter of welfare.

I always thought this EU business was a mistake.
 
This is another piece on nonsense. Here in France where horse-meat is eaten I have never been asked to produce my horses' passports. Would make no difference if I were.

1. The slaughter declaration is not in the passport - it is on an ownership document which is kept separate.

2. My vet's receptionist or local pharmacy will sell me BUTE without asking my name or for a sight of my passports.

3. The horsemeat sold by my local supermarket and butcher comes from Mexico and Canada - which are outwith EU law anyway.

Do the EU propose to ban the import of horsemeat for human food consumption????

Even worse, a large percentage of the horses slaughtered in Canada and Mexico come from the US (due to their hypocritical stance on the subject - it's not okay for us to kill our own horses humanely but it's a-okay to ship them for hours and hours so long as someone else gets their hands dirty) which has even fewer controls on medications - specifically what you can buy over the counter rather than from a vet - than Canada! (I understand Mexico has fewer regs again, since there are things you used to be able to buy over the counter in the US which you can only buy there now.)
 
I am aware of the appalling conditions in Mexico and I have to say, in fairness, that one supermarket has stopped selling meat from Mexico after I told him what they did to horses.

However, it makes a complete nonsense of EU regs.
