I have just been alerted to this on another website I use:

http://www.blackouteurope.eu/

The site is rather melodramatic and I first thought it could be a hoax, but a google search does bring up mention of EU internet rules very recently dated.

Does anyone know any more about this?

There is not a chance on this planet that they could pull that off even if they tried!! The 'Genius's' that currently release all those lovely viruses and hack into the MOD etc for fun would break that apart in seconds... Plus, the government would have no way of monitoring what we do, it would all be sent underground.

At present they monitor everything on the net in an attempt to infiltrate comms from terrorists etc and that ability would then be massively reduced.. There would be rogues ISP's everywhere that you could get round it on in minutes.. guaranteed!!!

Plus, the global economy is screwed enough, killing the web retailers would just about grind us all to a halt!!!

Did you actually read what these new rules were? I think you may find it is about the fact that they wish to be able to monitor EVERY email, blog, chat room, forum board and telephone call everybody makes.

I did read them and no that is not what it was about. That was a move by the UK government that they recently backed off of, ironically enough because the EC pretty much told them to.

This is something else, and I'm not entirely sure what is true and what is not which is why I'm trying to find clarification from someone who does know. I am aware that this could be a hoax, and I'm not of the credibility of that site. Certainly if it was to the extent that the blackout europe site suggests I would have expected it to be in the media extensively.

but there articles out there hinting that there is something going on with the EU regarding internet usage that will be voted on in May:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124099708053168033.html
http://www.reuters.com/article/internetNews/idUSTRE53R5NU20090429

Neither of these articles really explain for the person who hasn't followed this, nor explain what it means for the average internet user. I'm inclined to think blackout europe is exagerating, but as a keen internet user I am interested to try and discover some sort of truth regarding this.
