I've been told to use pure eucalyptus oil to harden hooves and clean the frogs. Is it a) easily obtainable?
b) cost effective?
Thanks

I use eucalyptus and iodoform mixed together to brush on hooves. It is not an oil as such, just a strong anti fungal solution. Fantastic for horses that get fungal infections in tehir hoof walls and soles. My vets make it up for me. Very cheap and extremely effective
My farrier recommended it years ago but only for the sole/frog area to keep thrush at bay. I used it about once or twice per week and applied it around the frog with a dropper but never put any on the hoof wall itself. Although you can get a small bottle from places that sell aromatherapy oils ie Holland & Barrett, I ordered a larger bottle from the pharmacy counter (Superdrug in my case) and it was loads cheaper. I had to pour it into the smaller bottle with dropper to administer it and keep in my grooming box.
WHY? The hoof needs to breath and smothering it in any oil is tantamount to suffercating a child.
