European Showjunping Champs nominated entries

I know its not a given but who would Nick Skelton ride ? I didn't think he had a championship horse ready.

The germans will take some beating.

he is nominated on Nemo. and never mind the germans, worry about the french!!

Nemo ?

Didn't get as far as the French had palpitations at the germans and that was enough.

This feels like quite a crunch time for british showjumping I really hope it all works out, particularly on home soil.

Some very strong teams, Im guessing Peppermill is not fit then???? How annoying!! It said in the H&H today that the dublin team will form the backbone - if they go well!!!

Im keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Both Nemo and Transmission are named for Nick. Personally I think Nemo lacks a little bit of scope, and sespite Skelly's undiminished skills he's yet to get a really good tune from Heritage who does have the scope! No surprises about the list.

Surprises for me are, why no John Whittaker, or Robert?Sorry have I missed something?
I think the Irish could go well, hope the Brits do, but can see my French flag having to come out!

Peppermill is out of action though I did think they might use Casino as an option for either him or Robert. However he's not been asked to do a Nations Cup yet so maybe there is something of which we are not aware.

Thank you , those replies clear things up for me.Why isnt Pandur and Graham Lovegrove named, they did so well in Portugal recently, or will the tracks be a lot bigger?. At the risk of becoming a tad controversial, I see that a Rolette and a Billy Birr are named for other teams!!Anyway, hope there is some decent TV coverage.

yes casino has been placed in three GCT grand prixs this season so i am fairly sure there is something we dont know!

I must admit the French and Germans look unbeatable - apart from by each other! The German team is really a whos who in international show jumping!

Fingers crossed for the British team - i would love to see Tim Stockdale and Corlato on the team - she is my favourite show jumper - she has so much ability and character and Tim riders her fantastically. Very strange about the Whitakers but at least it gives some others a chance (nothing against the Whitakers of course, just nice to see some other faces in the team esp given how well some have done this year).

I hope so too but for me it depends who is commentating, Hickstead was boring.

I see racing coverage is to be cut in half by the BBC.

It still amazes me how few ' horsey' people watch the televised events which is a shame. I hope it doesn't become a use it or lose it scenario.

Graham and Pandur (a Nick Skelton "reject") have a good record but haven't competed at 5* level yet which is essential before contesting a Championship event for which the heights are up to 1.60m. And Pandur is already 14, so hasn't got oodles of potential for the future.
Of course it would have been good for Ben to have both Rolette and Robin Hood as possibles, and to have had Will and Billy Birr as possibles, but it's hard to blame owners for accepting very big offers.
Sad that we could only manage 8 riders instead of the permitted 10 (and 20 horses).

are they allowed to start 10 as the home side like in eventing, and name the four who count as the team? because if they are surely it would have been better to let some of the lesser riders have a chance to make up the numbers. Gemma paternoster for example, should have gone to falsterbro til the selectors changed their minds last minute and she jumped well last week in spain. surely if we can start 10, we ought to?

Has nobody considered the possibility that the Whitaker family are standing their ground against the BSJA in light of the way they have treated Michael? Personally, if I had horses winning big money classes abroad, I wouldn't waste them competing in teams when it was entirely unappreciated. And it's hardly as if they need the exposure!

Nothing, but I doubt he's particularly made up about being treated like a criminal by them. Whatever your views on his case, if it were a member of my family, I wouldn't be best pleased about it either. They are entirely unprofessional... in every aspect it seems!

Highly unlikely. Peppermill hasn't competed since May so far as I know. Robert does not consider Lacroix (his favourite horse) as Championship calibre. Ellen and Ocolado might have been a possibility but I've not had time to check if they have actually qualified - only results at particular events count these days.

Oh i think it is fair to say it has been considered....

after all portofino aside (i dont think the selectors can go there after bejing) Michael has Amai and the other one both capapble (well if they can jump a GCT class they aren,t short of ability) that he could lend John if he was that desperate, but casino's form is pretty good this year, certainly as good as some of the horses listed.
however I think the BSJA had their hands tied by the FEI about the way the case was and is being handled. They cannot have a long drawn out fight with being the hosts foir the europeans and Michael must know that. And all this delay means by the time the hear the case Michaels suspension will be over and he knows that as well. Much better to stoip competing immediately than to carry on while protesting and have the suspension (which might be longer) hanging over you.

As a point of discussion I fail to see what can be discussed. Peppermill is not available probably due to injury (or whatever) Michael is on a doping enquiry. Until the allegations or proven or dropped a national association can not do anything to help or hinder. My god there would be uproar if the BSJA got involved either in favour or against.

Exactly Freshman...this is nothing to do with the BSJA it's an FEI case...

Assuming Peppermill is crocked (only reason in my mind he wouldn't be the first horse on the team !) i would have thought Casino, or perhaps even Utah would be as good as anything else in this country...and of course even a slightly lesser horse will go as well 'under JW' as some more capable horses would go under lesser jockeys. I know the young guns need a chance...but try them out at Superleague level first....not Championship level

I don't hold out much (any !?) hope of us retaining or bettering our bronze medal of two years ago....

i think that is what i said wasnt it? the Bsja have their hands tied in this matter.

as for your other comment Rambo, i tend to agree that both Casino and Utah have as good form as some of the others on the list and thought i wasnt really involved with showjumping at tthe last europeans i seem to recall team whitaker had quite alot to do with our medal and of course securing our olympic qualification cos we werent at that point...... so am just a bit surprised john isnt even even on the short list. but maybe now he is part of the selection team, he cant be?

Unfortunately we just don't have the horsepower in this country to compete at Championship level with or without the Whitakers. The Germans, French and Americans have depth and could field 2 or more teams if required whereas we struggle to find a full team of real medal contenders.

If only we had the likes of Rollette, Billy Birr, Tinka's Boy, Arko, etc to choose from!! We have after all produced these horses. Personally, I think the system is failing the owners who put an awful lot of money, time and emotion into the sport. Surely the BSJA should try to keep these horses in the UK? I don't have the answers but there must be owners who would jump at the chance of keeping some of these top horses in British hands rather than them going to the competition??

Tim and Ben did fantastic in Beijing and Peter Charles (who until recently jumped for Ireland and who would have filled his spot if he hadn't returned to representing the UK?!!) has had a superb 2009 but we need a team where all 4 will jump clear rounds in both rounds to be able to be competing for medals. Nick has all the skill but does he have the horse...?

The Europeans is on home ground, and after a dismal Olympics, poor showing in the Nation Cups and especially at Hickstead(!) we really need to pull something out of the bag, but like many of you I don't hold much hope!
