Apologies if this subject has already been done to death ....

What are people's experiences with EVA rubber matting? Was it worth the expense of the outlay? I am considering it for my stable - to be used with bedding?

Also are the interlocking mats better?

Thank you for your help

I've got inmterlocking EVA mats from teh rubber manufacturing company. Cost aroudn £300 delivered over 5 years ago. They are now outside their 5 year guarantee period and are nowhere near needing repalcing. I much prefer them to rubber mats - far easier to lift and manoeuvre :) They did stretch slightly initially but this has not caused a problem :)

I had the standard thickness interlocking green Fieldguard EVA mats down for 12 years and have only just upgraded to the thicker ones as my horse is 23 now and I thought he needed a little more comfort. Not that the thinner ones had worn or anthing, they are still serviceable after all this time but we had a move to new stables and over the years I had to cut them to fit and the new stable was much bigger anyway. I didn't care about the expense because I already had had much more than my moneys worth out of the old ones.
They are very light and easy to move to clean underneath. If there is any damp leaking into the stable, the bedding and horse is insulated from it because is just goes underneath.
I'd thoroughly recommend them anytime for ease and economy.

I haven't used them personally but my friend has and she found they moved around too much for her liking (not sure if this was due to them not fitting the stable properly ).

I looked into getting the EVA mats when I was investing but opted for the heavier rubber ones - wish I had gone with the light weight ones as they are a pig to move about each spring when I pull them out to disinfect etc. They are so heavy that this year I gave up and just disinfected and scrubbed mats in-situ (did my back in moving the first 3 and had to give up :()

I have the EVA mats, just at the front of the stable, they will move if left on their own but I find when the bed is down, they stay put. I do not have the interlocking either.

Also I am able to pick them up on my own when cleaning, with the rubber ones I had that was not possible at all. They also look "softer" to me than the rubber mats, which is initially why I wanted them, although for some reason I expected them to be spongy which they are not (well for my weight anyway - but they look like they give slightly when my boys on them)

I have used shavings, wood pellets and straw as bedding, and have now gone back to a full bed of straw with the mats almost uncovered at the front of the stable, as my boy is quite wet.

You will also need to consider the floor, as for the mats to be effective, the stable needs to be level and free draining

much prefer EVA mats to rubber - had both.

Pro's: EVA mats - much lighter easire to move and clean; warmer - more insulating for the horses when they lie down. Easy to fit - just need a stanley knife to trim to shape.

Cons; they do stretch when you first put them down so you do need to trim them a couple of times but its easy to do.
