Even more reluctant to walk on road after being shod?

Hi,
Someone on my Facebook feed asked what does 'footy' mean and so I started looking that up because I had never heard the term but it brought me to this blog, to your problem with your horse, and after viewing the photo's I have a suggestion.
It looked to me like your farrier is not giving your horse enough shoe. The hoof should not be crammed into a shoe. This is like putting shoes on your feet that are too small...it cramps your feet.
There should be a coin's width specifically a 'nickles' worth of shoe showing from the mid branch on back on both sides of the foot. Then your shoes need much more heal...I would say almost 1/2 to 3/4's of an inch more shoe so the heal of the shoe extends beyond the heel of the hoof.
I took classes for horseshoeing & hoof care and learned to do my own trimming & shoeing. I did this so I could know when a farrier was or wasn't doing a good job or not. I have all the tools of the trade so if something happens I can fix it should the farrier not be able to come right away.
These shoes look to me like they are too small for your horse. I would be interested to know what you finally came up with on your guy's 'footy' problem.

Take the shoes off, get a recommended hoof trimmer who can advise on diet/exercise. You may need boots on the fronts for hacking on stony surfaces until whatever issues there are are sorted out.

As this thread is from 2012 hopefully the problem is fixed by now. Would be interesting to see what the outcome was.
