i am sitting here in my sitting room with 3 experienced policemen... and not a single one of them knows the rules surrounding the C1 licence thingy.

they seem to be coming to the conclusion that i can drive my 5 tonne lorry as long as if i go to a weighbridge it weighs in at less than 3.5tonnes. even though it is capable of carrying more.

i think they're wrong.

they are drunk after all...

They're wrong! Tut tut. AND drunk!! Tut tut tut.

BIG QUESTION. Why are you sat in your sitting room with three policeman. We need to know!

I worry about it too. I have a licence that allows me to drive a 7.5 tonne. The lorry I use was bigger, but was downgraded to a 7.5 tonne when converted to a horsebox. Have been told its fine for me to drive, but just want to make sure?

Anyone know the answer?

hubby and two friends, nothing exciting i'm afraid.

i have D1 on my licence... what on earth is that for?!

Sounds like they've got there weights confused and the ministry weight rules regarding tax. Vehicles that are taxed for carrying less still require the same licence. Example , Haulier driving a 38 tonne truck can have it "re plated " to 21 tonnes, if say he/she was transpoting ping pong balls. However they would still need a driving licence for the 38 tonner. If they transported engine parts in the vehicle to a weight of 30 tonnes... I'll shut up, I'm boring myself!

hun, we're checking our driving licences now.
i can drive up to 7.5 tonnes, and licence says C1.
Ruth can drive HGVs, and licence says C.
there are even little pics (on back of pink card bit of licence) showing what size you can drive...
check yours...!
Tennessee, i had a downrated 7.5 tonner (was 10 tonne downrated) and drove it for years, because it was downrated it counted as non-HGV then (i think they call it something else now, LGV.

Yes, I had one. It has to be restested and replated as a 7.5 tonner. You can't just drive it undre 7.5 tons in weight it has to have an under 7.5 ton plate.

Thanks, all this has been done
smile.gif

Does it still have to be under 7.5 tonne when loaded? Assuming so, so will check for sure what it weighs now and add the girls to it (they sure are fat this year lol!)

It has to weigh no more than the plated weight, which is usually 7,490 kilos -ish.

The "plate" in case anyone is wondering is a piece of paper sealed into a metal frame attached somewhere in the cab of a lorry.

To one of the posters above, - daft, ain't it - driving a lorry with one horse on board and towing a caravan on the back of it as long as you keep under 7.5 tons - all on a car licence, when you passed your test as long ago as me???? Crazy!

I still don't feel that we have had an adequate explanation for why the OP was sitting with three policemen in her lounge, do you?????????

We are all waiting!

My lorry was a 10 tonner and it was down plated to 7.5 tonne when it was converted.

The 'plating certificate' in the cab says 7.5 ton (max loaded weight), which means it must be under 7.5 tonne when loaded, and also that I can drive it on my C1 license without needing to take a HGV test.

To down grade a lorry (whatever the original weight) it must be given a new plating certiciate for the cab by the DVLA.

OP: If you want to drive your 5 tonne lorry on your 3.5 tonne license you would need to get it down plated to 3.5 tonne max loaded wieght by the DVLA. However I expect that you wouldn't have the capacity to put any horses in if you did that!

Ahh, If they were traffic officers they would be able to repeat the road traffic act & highway code parrot fashion & understand it.
Tell your hubby to get one of those as a new mate.

even if it has been downgraded you must be carfull as it could be 7.5 tonne when unladen?when loaded with horses as you are likely to be over loaded??
