Is it really necessary? I have seen people at small unaffiliated events lathered up in this stuff cos they are doing the 'open' (which is about 3ft or something), makes me giggle. If I was that concerned my horse wasn't going to get his legs over it, don't think I'd be going in the class!!

Obviously maybe different if doing a much bigger event (and awhole lot braver than me!)

all the same really, gold label is quite good and fairly cheap. just make sure you keep it in a cool place as when it melts it's practically useless and like putting soup on your horses legs!! - not easy!!

agree with LadyT tho - not sure you really need it at lower levels.

My friend Jo started on about "custard" when we were fence judging recently. I realised after a bit that she meant eventing grease and did not know what it was called.

Mind you, at Chatsworth last year, she asked me those girths for horses wearing studs are called. That would be a stud girth dear!

I dont agree with not using it until much later on. One of mine scraped his hind legs over a BE Novice fence last year - he wasnt stuck or anything but did scrape himself enough to bleed so I started using grease as I think in that case it would have helped. I only use it on the hind legs though TBH, not on the fronts.
