Hi everyone, i wasnt sure where to put this so i have put it here and in the general section. I am a event rider in the co. durham area, i have a lil tb mare running at PN british eventing level at the moment, i have found another super lil horse that i would love to event but need to find an owner. i am not sure how to go about finding an owner and was wondering if anyone had any advice or ideas, the horse is only for sale at 1650. but has a lot or skill and would make a very good investement. thanks a lot. equestrianism@hotmail.co.uk

I admire your determination. However, if I was a serious event horse owner I would be looking at horses that would probably have been bred for the job and be paying quite a bit more than £1650. Also, and I'm sure you are succesful at what you do, I would be looking at putting a horse with an experienced rider that was competing at a higher level. Not necessarily a 4* rider but one that has had experience in competing a number of horses from intro/PN and upwards. Sorry to maybe burst your bubble, but that is the reality of what you are looking for. I'm not saying it's impossible, but your best bet is a family member/friend - a great aunt that you can sell your dreams to! Good luck!

Its a tricky process I have a horse at advanced level and have up and coming horses and finding owners/sponsorship is very tricky.

Agree with S_V relatives tend to be the best bet!

A good horse is not always determined by its price. There are plenty of good horses out there for little/no money if you look hard enough, especially from racing, as I am sure you know. Horses like Ensign were only about £1000! And Moonfleet- £2k from the Doncaster sales as a unraced 4 year old!
There is plenty of absolute rubbish out there for selling for £25k- price has no bearing at all on ability,....

Youngeventer, your best bet is to try your relatives, or ask them to loan you the money, and you can pay it off month by month. £1650 is not much and can easily be paid off...

True you always get the few amazing ones for little money, but most of the top horses are moved around for small fortunes. I guess its like everything- there is always the exception to the rules. You hear about Moon fleet and Ensign but think of the thousands of horses registered and were bought for nothing that you never hear of again. Guess its luck and good timing!

the little mare i have my eye on is an ex-race horse and has i feel a lot of skill and heart. i would buy the horse myself but i already have one of my own and can not afford to have two at the same time. i think i myself would be somewhat apealing to first time owners because they woudnt be taking a huge risk on me by buying a 1650 horse and would make a lot of money out of her for sure instead of a 30,000 which i may strugle to ake to badminton lol. i also woudnt charge huge fees for livery and training like other riders so this my sway in my faver?? what do you think???

Alot of eventers are in the same boat. I'm a young rider and produce all mine from 4 year olds as I havent the funds. My best mate is in her first year of professional eventing- shes 19, and has worked her way up from nil. I guess if you want something you keep trying. At the end of the day people with money will always be up there but thats life, and you keep plugging at it. Win some you lose some, even if this horse doesnt work out, maybe it was meant to be that way, there are always other opportunities- trust me!

Dont you worry I feel the same! And my horse is hopefully going to Bramham and Blenheim this year..... I guess try the ad in the local papers/ put cards up in tack shops etc....

Yes, sorry - it was a sweeping statement. I paid next to nothing for my boy and he's no world-beater but the temperament of a saint and has competed PN, part-qualified for the BD regionals at novice and won his first elementary and has showjumped up to Disco. He's being aimed at novice BE this year and will do some affiliated elementarys - with a bit of luck! I do think it's rare though that they get to the level of Ensign when bought at a bargain price.

Such is life i'm afraid, and the game of eventing. There will be others that you fall head over heels for when maybe you have access to funds and support.

If it were that simple we would all have the horses we so desperatly want to own and ride!
Be as pro active as you can about finding an owner, but also think realistically that it might just not happen.

true why would people want to own a horse with me if they can have it with pippa, i asume the only advantage i have is i wont charge any where near almost 200 a week in training and livery. i have a website that will be up and running soon that might help?????

Go for it. As I said earlier, keep perservering. You never know you might get a lucky break! What horse do you have now?

i have a lil tb mare that i did my first two be events with last season, i have just come home from woorking down south and now want to make a go at eventing propperly but without the support and help i wont manage it. how about you where you from??

Midlands, want to have a crack at eventing properly but getting a degree first and its a glorified hobby at the moment as very few make it... even if you can afford 50K horses.... have a mare i started off myself, now we are qual 3* hoping to go to Bramham then Blenheim this year. I am lucky, I may not have huge amounts of money but I have a fab mum, dad, trainer and family who help me hugely. I could not do it otherwise. Untill you can get help and support eventing is (sorry to say) virtually impossible.
Its a vicious circle I know, but have you thought about basing your self and your horse in a professionals yard as a stable jockey to get experince and contacts? You dont earn a huge amount but you get alot of experince. I know Bill Levett is looking for some one and you have the opportunity of eventing one of their horses. The add is on eventingworldwide.com and in the back of H&H

i was based on 3 differant yards with my horse over 1 and a half years in the midlands. i didnt get more than 40 a week hence why i came home to the north east. i learnt so much and got a few exams on the way to. i would not be prepared to work on another yard and take my horse, i would love to work on a yard near me so i dont have to live in or move my horse. i realy dont have a clue wha to do lol.

have you tried going round the local event/race/sj/dressage/etc.. yards putting a wanted ad up?

freelance grooming/ riding out etc?

Do you have your own yard at home? If so, have you thought about taking horses in to school for people?

Sell your self out there. In eventing nothing comes to you, you have to go and chase after it.

No i dont hae my own yard sadly, one day maybe i hope. I am struggling to get myself some transport to, which is why it would be amazing if i could ride a few horses for people at the yard where my horse is, its a nice yard like, arena, horse walker, show jumps, a mass of fields and some xc fences so i hae everything at my fingures.
