What are people's thoughts on competing at/ using venues that don't have insurance? Also, would riding clubs etc check if a venue has insurance before using it?

Riding clubs - and pony clubs - carry their own insurance. I can't really think of a venue that wouldn't have some form of cover - unless it was just a field? But at the end of the day that is why we as riders / horse owners have our own cover. Never rely on someone else to insure you!

I have got my own insurance but there was an incident at a very well used local venue where their negligence caused damage to other people's property. I suspect that they don't have liability insurance. I have also heard of a xc venue that doesn't have insurance. Would you check before going places or do you not mind?

If they didn't have insurance it would make me think what else had they not thought about. They would be very stupid as if they were found to be liable for any accident they would be personally responsible for any damages awarded.

I confess I have never checked a venue's insurance - I wonder if they would say anyway -but I honestly can't think of anywhere we have competed that would not have insurance either as a result of the type of event being hosted or because there is also a business run there so insurance would be a legal / planning requirement. It honestly would not have occurred to me to check.

If the negligence in the issue above is culpable the lack of insurance does not prevent a claim being made at law. The responsible party risks a judgement against them as an individual and they would stand to lose property etc if needed to pay that judgement.
