Just thought I'd start a thread to discuss the norm with event photographers, mainly SJ and dressage as I understand its a bigger operation for eventing....

I regularly go to an event venue where the photographer usually gets a couple of shots max per round/test and they are usually online about 3-5 days later. No option to buy on the day. Photos are ok quality but sometimes hit and miss with timing/positioning - almost like they're not a horsey person, if you know what I mean?

Weekend just gone i went jumping to another venue slightly further afield and was mega impressed with the 'service'.... 6-10 photos from each round, all excellent quality and available to view and buy online the same evening! No option to buy at the event but prints sent out the next morning and received the day after that....

What do you find to be the norm?

I feel much more inclined to buy from a photographer who fits the later description after experiencing both now!

Local venue to us has a fab photographer who has images up the day of the event. Edited and everything I don't know how she does it. Being a one man band so to speak she doesn't offer prints whilst your there but I kind of prefer the wait of waiting for them to go online. She gets a about 5 or 6 shots per competitor and I think is well worth the money

Sounds like the first venue you mention uses someone that perhaps isn't a professional event photographer, or doesn't have the set up. Editing 1000 plus photos over event is a time consuming business, let alone uploading.

I used to bemoan the days where we jumped some huuuuge fences XC, at the end of the day would look at the photos, and the fence the photographer had chosen would be a tiny brush or something!!!

I prefer the ones where you can buy on the day. But, I would always prefer the file emailed to me rather than a print. Would have thought that would be easier for them too.

Yes possibly, although both photographers are one man bands, which makes the second photographer even more impressive!

It's gutting when the photos are rubbish! The company that does Blair is well known for always having cr*p pictures! I really wanted some from our horse competing there for the first time but they're so bad I didn't. Got a video instead but it's really not the same.
