Went to MK yesterday and went to have a look at the photos today (will post a link when they are up) and to give the photographers credit in both the SJ and x-c they had got loads of photos at some really interesting jumps!!! However although some were nice they were not stunning enough to pay £14 for the photo and an extra £5 to be allowed to post it on facebook!! thats a lot of money!! Id love it if more event photos offered low res images to put on facebook even if they put them on and tagged you in them, and charged a smaller fee for that.

As Ive brought nothing, but would have maybe paid £5 each for a low res image on FB, but obviously if no-one tells these comapanies they dont know, how is the best way to approach the photographers about this or is it not worth bothering?????
 
maybe email them ,theres nothing to loose :)

they are nearly encouraging people to steal them from webs sites by charging that much and tbh i wouldn't have paid that much and would have maybe copied it :o
i am now going to get slaughtered for admitting to this but come on £14 :eek: and then they want another £5 for showing your friends :(

i know people are trying to make a living taking photo's at events and may have to pay the organiser for the pleasure of being there and paying for fuel yada yada yada
but is it realistic to expect to make a living selling photo's ?

before event photography became so popular the only proofs i ever got were from our local newspaper jornalist and the pics were just a side line thing
with the price of entries ,diesal etc going up people simply cannot afford another £19 for one photo :eek:

i'm am now finished my rant ;) and will be found hiding under a large rock :o
 
You don't have to buy both, the print would be £14 and the small digital image for Facebook or Iphone or whatever would be £5, or am I wrong?
 
I was at a BE event in the north a couple of weeks ago with friends and the photographer was selling 6 photos for £44! They even had dressage pics which was lovely - friends daughter asked about copying them and posting them on FB and they said that was fine!
 
This really is my pet peeve :mad:

I understand that event photographers have got huge costs to cover per event (wages for 2/3 photographers, materials, IT etc), but surely by prices the photos lower, say £8-10, they'd sell many more, and make more of a profit that way?
I only bought 1 pic last year - it was £8, and printed on site - and when I go back this year I will be doing this again - I'm quite happy to pay £8.

And why do photo's need to be so big - I'd rather pay less for a slightly smaller print than £14+ for a bigger one (that I can't find a frame for anyway :p)
 
The best photographer I have been to was £18 for 3 photos in a buy 2 get the 3rd free deal. They always have good photos available that are printed on site and always have a que of people waiting to buy.
 
i agree that some photographers are being...erm...optimistic with their pricing! ;) i know they have to make a living, but...i will only buy pics if they are reasonable...surely it is better to sell lots of lo res Fbook Jpegs for a few quid each (and no priniting costs!) than no photos at £14 each???
there are some who i am happy to buy pics from and others who i don't bother. i usually always email to ask if i can buy lo res images and mostly i've not even had a reply... which is just rude- they could email back and say no surely?! :p
 
I bought some piccies the other day and was pleasantly surprised to see that the photographer had changed their prices to include a low res FB image for £4. As I only use my pics for FB I bought two.

I am quite happy to pay £15 for a printed photo and I usually ask if I can put it online - most photographers are happy for me to scan it and use to show family/friends. can't fault many of the p'grahers up here.

At nearly all the local events in our area we have the same photographer and they are fab! They have 3+ photographers on the course on xc's and assign a photographer to each ring at the shows. The prices are very reasonable- I think an unmounted 7x5 is something like £6. They have the FB images for £2 and you can also get a cd with 10 images on for £25. We are very lucky to have them so I always buy pictures to keep the business going!!

I've been at an event where the photographer was something like £15-£20 and they took a really lovely picture. But after spending £40+ on entry fees alone, I couldn't justify that price. It goes without say that if it was the price of the first photographer- I would have bought it like a shot!
 
If I had paid £14 for an image it wouldn't even cross my mind to ask if I could put it on FB, I'd just scan it in and put it on anyway!!

3 photos for £20 sounds like the way to go to me :)
 
Went to an unaff dressage the other month (youngsters first outing) there was a photographer there who must have taken about 20 photos of us in 1 test. Various shots too, good variety. Went to view them and was realy surprised you could have a low res. image for £2 with their website on the bottom, without website for £5. Minimum order was £5 so I bought 3 of the low res images at £2. Printed ones weren't expensive but I didn't realy want one of these, but useful to have a nice pro image as said horse will be for sale soon. If there hadn't have been the option of digital images I wouldn't have bought anything but as there was I spent £6. Not a huge amount but if many others do the same it all mounts up.

As a side thought how do you go about using a pro photo on adverts, is it allowed, do you need to ask permission?

My OH is a photographer (mainly wedding and lifestyle but is just going into equine photography) but wouldnt dream of charging prices like that. Before I met him I used to spend a fortune on photos, and I do think photographers need to realise that we can only just afford the diesal and the entry fees let alone high prices for photos we love and want and to be honest I have brought a few that were printed on site and were just on normal photo paper, nothing special at all, but I paid the price as its my horsey!!!
obviously now I have my own on site photographer :D so i have more photos than i know what to do with, but I totally agree that photo prices need to come down in price as other wise no one will buy them and the photographers will be out of a job either way!

yes just email/call them and ask. usually they are ok with it/ask you to say picture courtesy of.... etc :)
 
can I make you all aware that the average setup cost for an event photographer is approx 20 k and that's without including a trailer or van to work out of .. I looked at franchises that wanted 40k to setup.. then there is paper , mounts, bags , cards , fuel , insurance, advertising, possible payment to the organiser , sales staff wages and extra photographers to pay .if you guys stop buying photos you may end up not having these guys at your events.. food for thought !!
ps scanning and copying images without the consent is theft and illegal , if they are reported to facebook they WILL remove them
 
Horseman I don't think anyone has advocated stealing images, just cheaper prices for low res images. Been to 3 events recently and non of the images are good enough to justify £10+ pound a shot, mainly because I only jump little fences. However if I had HorseyWelsh's photogapher I would of bought at least 6 of them

No-one's forcing you to fork out the set-up costs, the decision to set up a photography business is one made with free will!

And if photographers keep ignoring what potential customers are asking for, they'll find themselves without actual customers - food for thought too!
