Bit of a morbid post sorry, but one of the others got me thinking, because i'd forgotten about the rider who was killed at Spring Hill in '03...

Since the first rider in '99 (Peta Becket (sp?)) how many people have been killed eventing since, not just in Great Britian, but in the whole world??
I remember that in total (ie not just the UK) there were 11 or 12 in '99 alone.. then there was Amanda Johnson in '00, Caroline Pratt.. since then there's been Sherelle Duke, the Asian Games rider, the French rider and they are just off the top of my head for this year...

Doesn't bare thinking about really

and also someone was paralysed in just a schooling fall (was an eventer though)

And also Bruce Davidson had that very nasty fall a couple years back breaking quite a few bones

yes it was alot of the riders didnt go to the funaral with all the up roar that had happened. I saw simon on dressage day walking past our stable he was looking forward to the xc then that happend it was awful in the tent were we all saw it happen the camra was on him.

Its awful it really is....... doesnt bare thinking about

but all the riders know the risks they take though.... same with every sport to a degree.

Polly phillips was our vet..... I dont really remember her was only 10/11 at the time. But my mum remembers it all the uproar etc... Her grave though is lovely (well as lovely as they can be) on the phillips land big nice stone cross surrounded by trees.

And we thankfully just missed caroline pratts fall at burghley that year we moved on to the next fence just before she came to the water.

R.I.P all

Yes, our sport is dangerous. But anytime you sit on a horse, there's a risk. But if you look at it like that then you'll never ride again. Anybody could die just crossing the road. Any deaths in a sport are of course extremely tragic but sadly that's just life.

I remember seeing Simon Long's fall on the TV it was horrible. Peter McLean used to work up at Burgie with Polly Lochore and his funneral was the tuesday before Tweseldown in 1999. Polly was my sister's JRN co-ordinator and I remember her leaving to go to the funeral. But we all know the risks.

Jemima Johnson a really fabulous person not sure what year that was?

Even thinking of Carolines tragic accident gives me tears in my eyes, she was one of the most lovely people I have ever been friends with, my mum and her were close friends and it is just heart wrenching even now.

Yes, it is scary to think about it and we are in a very risky sport. One girl up at our yard was very seriously injured just mounting her horse at the mounting block!

I've seen a video of the asian guy's accident and it's very scary to think how quickly and easily it can happen

I still think eventing holds the biggest risk of all equestrian sports even after hunting and jump racing.

See, everyone thinks jump racing is highly risky, which indeed it is, i'm not exactly saying it isn't.. BUT when was the last time someone DIED doing it.

No often a lot more broken bones and dead horses but surprisingly the death of jump jockeys isnt too bad *touch wood* think the last on I heard about was one man last yera foggotten his name now!

I suspect the difference with jump jockeys is the speed that they are jumping....they would be more likely to be thrown clear of the horse. In eventing, most of these deadly falls seem to occur at a fairly slow pace and the horse and rider just rotate together in what seems like slow motion
