Event rider deaths since '99

I was at Spring Hill 03, my friend was in the start gate, next to go, it all went quiet

That day really brought it home to me.

In all honesty, when we say we've had a bad day, because we got eliminated or had stops or fences down, at least we can say we are home safe and sound....

I didnt know Caroline, but seeing video footage and photos of the fall really upset me.

No, it was Richard Adams (of Wokingham Equestrian Centre). His mother Ann has been formidable in fund raising to purchase Paramedic Ambulances for use at Horse Trials.

It is very tragic, but sadly nothing new, because as everyone has observed it is a dangerous sport. I will always remember a really horrible day in 1992 when my sister had a nasty fall at a fence in the Intermediate at Peper Harrow - she was being attended to at the first aid tent when they suddenly all rushed off because a young girl had fallen at the same fence and died on her way to hospital. I'm not sure they ran Peper Harrow again.

Think this is a rather miserable thing to be talking about to be honest! I dont think its good to discuss these deaths because it'll just make some people even more worried doing the XC which I dont think is good for anyones riding.

Of course ANY death is tragic. But eventing is an adrenaline fueled sport, its probably the risk which makes it so. When we event, we are seeking that thrill you get when you go XC and the feeling you get when you cross the finish line.

I bet there are more deaths from general day-to-day riding % wise, to those in eventing. The media tell us more about higher-profile deaths therefore we probably dont even hear about simple ones caused out hacking / schooling at home etc. These are no less tragic but its simply horse riding in general which is dangereous IMO.

It was Samatha Hudson, she was a great person, heart renching when her horse came back to the yard without her, taking off his bandages for her just seemed so wrong....

I still think eventing holds the biggest risk of all equestrian sports even after hunting and jump racing.

See, everyone thinks jump racing is highly risky, which indeed it is, i'm not exactly saying it isn't.. BUT when was the last time someone DIED doing it.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, usually in jump racing because of the speed the horses are travelling the riders are thrown clear, the problem in eventing seems to be the rotational falls!

I feel less safe hunting than i do eventing.
