Very sad news: Event rider Karen Rodgers died today following a fall while competing in the intermediate class at Ballindenisk event in Co. Cork Ireland. A tragedy.
A rider has died at the Ballindenisk One-Day Event in County Cork.
Karen Rodgers fell from her horse Kilcoltrim Brigade while riding the cross-country course and was killed in what has been described as a freak accident.
Ms Rodgers was described as 'an experienced and successful rider' after the tragedy.
A statement released by Eventing Ireland stated: 'Eventing Ireland and the Fell family, organisers of the One-Day Event at Ballindenisk, Co Cork, wish to express their deep sadness and
shock following the death today (Sunday) of Karen Rodgers, who was tragically killed while competing on the cross country course with her horse Kilcoltrim Brigade.
'Karen was an experienced and successful rider, and had been involved in many aspects of equestrian sport in Ireland during the last ten years.'
Speaking after the accident, Eventing Ireland Chairman John Wright said: 'We are in a state of shock, which we are sure will be shared by everyone in the horse sport community.
'Karen was a well-known and popular figure in equestrian circles, and we wish to extend our profound and heartfelt sympathy to all her family and friends.'
it was a complete freak accident. She was actually thrown clear and the horse rolled onto her. they are a 2* horse and rider combination, fall happened at a simple 1* fence. so so sad
I can't in my entire life (which to be fair is only 20years long!) remember such a prolonged period filled with so many rider deaths. Tragic. Thoughts with Karens family x
Horse is ok I believe, think I saw him being led back. Yes fence was also on the novice track as part B of AB and has, I think, been jumped at previous competitions.
I think the horse was fine from the articles about it - does anyone know what happened in more detail?
Really awful, both her and Sherelle Duke were experienced and well capable riders - it can happen to anyone
Its really sad to hear of another event rider losing there life to this sport. But i suppose it does come with a risk which they are prepared to take. i just wish that there was something that could prevent these rotational falls from happening
