Eventers - the serious danger of unfixed portable fences...

That final sequence is just about the best evidence I have seen for Fixing Jumps down.

The comparison i would use would be - If there were marbles on the floor, and you step on them your likely to go on your arse. If you glue them all on the floor, you could safely walk on them.

Fences work on the same principle. If they roll under you, then there is little chance of staying upright. Simple.

ha, a bit of both i guess... supporting the venue, because i agree that their courses etc are usually lovely, but disagreeing about the corner fence turning being the reason the horse didn't have a rotational, that's all. but, it's all speculation, i know!

I never said it was the corner fence turning... I said that in this case they were very lucky that it started it's 'flip' as they were on the descent which meant they got away scot free, but I only said that on fb?

Genuinely don't think that- they were very very lucky not to have a rotational.

Thanks for posting kerilli!

I emailed this thread to DC as we have a lot of these portable fences in our pony club and she was shocked by what could have happened but ensured me all of our jumps are pinned down.

But thank you for awareness as I will be extra careful when course walking- if I ever get xcing again :)

It did make me think about how a compromise really needs to be reached for solid XC fences. Whilst you don't want them to topple EVER, and in the case of the pallisade skinnies shown it definitely hindered rather than helped the horses, in the sequence of photos of the corner being jumped a full-on rotational was avoided because the pony was 'rolled' towards the ground, giving the jockey time to be ejected over his head.

Lolo, it was this bit I was referring to, I think I must have misunderstood you then, sorry. Anyway, all that matters is that they both got away unscathed, thank heavens.

ps. another closet park bench jumper here too :o. I also jumped round bales - not side on (HORRIFICALLy dangerous if they roll) but through the V created when two were put together side by side ready to be collected.

me too, but only on a crazy JA pony, when I was young and mad, tried a few years later on my mum's mare and she was like WTF? are you crazy??
