Hey everyone!
I was just wondering if I could get some advice. I have had my 16.2hh gelding for over a year now, and feel ready for the eventing season. Last year he and I were getting accustomed to one another, but now we know each other inside out, and I trust him. We are jumping 1m sj tracks, and have jumped 1.10m xc (he likes xc more haha).
Im planning to kick off this year, and really get going. He is now 6, so a bit wiser than last year too!
So, here's what I'm hoping to find out.
1st: how long do you usually want between events?
2nd: do you think I would be able to attempt a BE 100, or should I leave it til next season?
3rd: what does everyone feed your event horses?

Thanks!!!

Welcome to the forum its kerrazy in here but you can get some gems of advice! And it was great thanks- been keeping up with bs maybe you could come out with us when term starts again?! How was your xmas?!

Sounds good to me! Love to :D Have you gotten the u18 training booklet too? And that's what I was hoping for! Lots of different opinions, but means expanding knowledge :))
It was goooood <3 spent whole week in Dubai doing natural horsemanship and dressage :D

I would say with a youngster its best to do a few events withi a short period of time of each other. Autumn did her first BE's last year and did four in total. The first two were a fortnight apart. And then the next two were a month later and also a fortnight apart - after doing well in these that was more than enough for a first season coupled with the other sj/dressage comps she went to.

Unless you've been doing BE100 courses at unaff I would do the first few at BE90. BE100 is not that much more difficult in terms of height but the position/technicality of fences makes it that bit harder. Plus with BE costing so much you may as well go 'easy' on a young horse and get yourselves some good confident starts.

good luck!

Umm no don't think I've got the booklet but I've got a rule book? If you need anything like info wise its all on their website. And see you on Monday!

i'd start at Training or Intro tbh, if you find that very easy you can step up, but it's better to find it easy than the other way! If you're doing 1m sj and xc at home well, then BE100 should be fine, see how the lower levels go. At 6 he's still young so there's no rush, obviously.
I like to have 10 days or 2 weeks between events, unless they're very local and/or very nice, in which case i'll do consecutive weekends.
re: feed, depends totally on the horse and its breed, type, natural energy levels etc, but as a general rule I feed good quality forage (steamed or soaked), limit their access to grass if it's very plentiful (don't want a big grass belly!), and feed 2 or 3 times a day with a chaff base, balancer, Alfa A if more energy required, and perhaps a mix if the horse needs more condition or even more energy. i try to keep starches to a minimum.
hope that helps, good luck!

Start at BE90 and see how you go - there's quite a difference in technicality on the XC course moving up to BE100 so no point scaring either of you to start with. I normally aim for 2wks in between events but will sometimes do a run of one a week for 2 or 3 weeks then give a 3-4wk break. Just depends on when the local events are. Feedwise - mine gets Power and Performance and conditioning cubes plus a bit of alfa-a oil, mug of outshine and Topspec balancer. Suits him well but feed always depends on the horse.
