Are eventing boots necessary? I'm doing the wobbleberry challenge (so assume no prior eventing knowledge!), and can't make up my mind whether booting the horse for cross country is useful or not.

I generally work on a 'need' rather than 'nice to have' basis for tack/equipment, so wouldn't want to just boot up if I didn't need to for a BE80. What do I need to consider to make the decision? Horse in question is an unshod welsh cob, just in case that makes any difference.

All input gratefully received :D

No need to boot, even less so with an unshod horse, the trend is to boot regardless of need nowadays, I rarely boot for xc at lower levels and have never had anything injure itself, most do more harm in the stable or field than in a 5 min xc round.

No need, think of all the hunters that don't wear boots!

I do boot for xc mainly because our horses generally wear studs.
