Eventing cobs BE

I have a plan. Which is to work on this canter and fitness as a priority.

I think this is definitely a great plan.

I've had a quick look at some of your previous posts to have a look what he's like. I think you need to really work on his fitness - lots of trotting up hills would do him wonders. Also, maybe think about what you're feeding him so he has more energy and "oomph."

I evented a Cob X and she was lighter than your boy, but it was always getting the balance between not letting her get too round and unfit, but making sure she's getting enough energy in her diet. I also had a pony who was meant for driving when I was younger, and we cantered her out hacking about 2/3 times a week so she was fit enough to do hunter trials etc.

So try fittening him up more, and having lots of lessons, and keeping in his comfort zone a bit. You don't want him to get too wobbly about things.

I do think all horses do have a limit though, so you need to bear in mind that perhaps due to his type/conformation, you won't be able to push him too much further.

Good luck!

Just a suggestion but for your fitness consider taking your horse swimming.......gets the job done without adding wear and tear to the joints, which is inevitable at this time of year on hard ground. Failing that, hire a GOOD all-weather six furlong gallop!

What would you recommend for fitness? At the moment I'm cantering him every 4 days and our hacks (normally one or two a week) have lots of trotting up hills.

What about interval training? For example, 3 minutes canter, 1 minute walk, 3-1-3-1. The times can obviously vary depending on his fitness, maybe you have to start with 2-2-2-2 or similar. There are loads of different varieties and opinions out there so just follow your gut feeling at first, but make sure the walks aren't too long.
