I'm having a great afternoon sitting watching the FEI Luhmuhlen Classics 2015 on H&C. Just finished the SJ and the last 4/5 horses I watched didn't touch a pole. This seems very different from badminton (the only other big event I have watched, hence the ignorance!) where there are poles here there any everywhere it seems. Is this a valid observation? I notice the SJ at Luhmuhlen is on a surface, could that be making much of a difference? Maybe I am wrong overall lol but have enjoyed watching :)
ETA - maybe I'm not comparing like for like (no ideas about what * either are, just that I will never be near it even in my dreams!)

The xc at Luhmuhlen is less demanding than at Badminton this year. Mark Todd was quoted in H&H as saying that it was soft, and more like a 3* than a 4* (athough rated as 4*) Badminton is a much tougher question, so horses were more tired there before going into the showjumping, hence having more poles.

Event horses are more used to show jumping on grass than "pure" show jumpers, but even they must appreciate the consistency of the surface.

That makes perfect sense about them being fresher, thinking back they looked a lot sharper too! Thanks for the explanation / opinion!!

Wasn't it also the case that they Luhmelen wanted an incident free event after the tragedy of last year.
