First thing I noticed was the price rise - ok yes it's 10p but not sure why tbh?

And at first thought it was going to be a big fat issue, but nope was a catologue about some 4x4

Hopefully it'll pick up in the next couple of issues

It better pick up or Im canceling my subscription!
I love it every January i get sent info that my DD will be increased due to the price increase of Eventing.
Thats fine, but perhaps they could put something more interesting in it than the durrants.

That thought has crossed my mind too - only been subscribing 6months. I read it only as I've got a genuine interest in the sport etc. Oh and seeing mate's name in results is always nice.

I buy it onthly and it seems to be getting rather poor I hope it improves! hardly read it this month nothing worth while.

I think its a very lazy magazine - there are no good articles - so much effects the event horse - vet, feeding, exercise, training, techniques, course design, riders nerves, proper profiles of up and coming riders and how they get there, proper profiles of working riders, people whose first season, 10 to follow, horses/Riders who have overcome problems (dressage, Sj, Xc and how they did it). See these are just a few of my ideas in 1 minute. I would like it to be more like Horse magazine without the happy hacker articles.

Agree Lec. Ppl slate Horse Mag, but IMO have far more interesting articals. Anna Bruce and Lou Lou both write good stuff, informative and constructive, beit for eventing, dressage or SJing.
I love some of the training techniques esp if like me I havent had much training recently, it gives me new things to work on without my horse getting board with the same odd format.

Just thought of something else - every xc has a tricky fence which catches people out maybe photographs and a a pro telling you how it should be ridden.

As the editor of Eventing I'm always interested in feedback from readers. I was a little surprised to see that someone had written that there were few articles in the March issue. I thought our features on the BE convention, on events that produce the 'right' statistical result, a training article on a horse with a ditch phobia (this is part of a series), plus a piece on hardworking organisers and one written by a mother who juggles eventing with bringing up children was a fairly wide cross section of pieces that covered a wide spectrum of issues affecting the sport and the people who compete in it. If people feel that this isn't value for money — and we include many pages of the Horse Trials Guide as a service to riders (BE magazine does not provide rider comments) — then I would be really interested if they could tell me what articles they think we should run to make it worth the cost. As a specialist magazine Eventing inevitably carries a higher price tag than many more general interest magazines, but if you take out a subscription you get some really fantastic deals.

Thanks Julie.
The Horse Trials guide is interesting the first time its read, however, over the past few years nothing much changes bar when new fixtures are added. Equally a lot of the feed back you rec'v is from Pro riders not necessarily grassroutes. Perhaps having a pro/grassroute view might help?
Perhaps over the winter you could feature certain events and include pictures of courses etc? I know the likes of Eventriders.com and EventingWorldWide include this on their websites, however, thats yet another pay out for us struggling eventers as it is.
The artical on ditch phobia is intersting, but something similar has been covered in the likes of Your Horse or Horse magazine.
Again all the *product trial pages* are all done by pros. There are many non pros out there with one or two horses which could do something similar?
I love reading Rachel Wakefields column, interesting stuff, of course us non-pros like to hear whats going on with our top riders, whether at parties, births or holidays.
Enjoy reading rider diaries throughout the season too. Perhaps a winter one? to keep us all entertained as surely eventers dont just go underground?
I went to the BE convention last year and enjoyed it, however, its not something i would necessarily be that interested to read about.
The Addington Eventing forum which is on today infact I would be more interested to read about - as IMO is out of my price range to attend *annoyingly when its only 30 minutes away* but again at £45 thats the price of a training session for me and many others.
Come the summer months Eventing is aways a very good read, its just the quieter months I find the magazine could do wtih being filled with more interesting articals like a few years ago when there was a diary of a new event taking shape, from field to event day - that made interesting reading.

I thought the ditch article was good as I know a lot of people have problems with them. It would be good if the person who was featured maybe gave feedback in 6 months to say if it has worked long term. Obviously Amy Young did very well after being featured last year but again would be interesting to know if the advice she had helped her in anyway. The statistical information was pretty interesting but it is not a clincher in why I buy the magazine. I have to say I do go with the advice on the event feedback pages and have found it pretty helpful especially the percentages of xc clears which I cannot get anywhere else.
I guess with the rise of some excellent websites like Eventing Worldwide that do a wide range of articles and reports that we have maybe come to expect more? I really like the letters page as it often brings up some interesting views specifically about eventing which nowhere else covers.

All very interesting stuff. Many thanks. You can be sure that your ideas will be taken on board. I really like the idea about a diarist continuing over the winter months, and we already have plans in place to do follow ups to our training features to see how the horses are progressing. As Amy Young will be our new rider diarist (now there's some 'hot off the press' news) I'll ask her to comment on the training she had last season to see how much it helped her. I'll be interested to know if you think the rider who was the diarist during the season should continue to write during the winter months, or would you like to see the slot filled by someone else. Best of all I would also be grateful if comments could be emailed directly to me (julie_harding@ipcmedia.com) as well as pasted up on the forum - that way I can ask readers questions and provide them with the articles they find really interesting.

I dont understand why this would be so? Can you explain???

I would imagine that because it has a limited market the margins are tighter, therefore, to make it worth the publisher's while they have to price it higher than a magazine with a higher volume readership.

Economices of scale. It costs x in fixed costs to produce a magazine which needs to be split between the magazines published each month. If less magazines are published than the proportion of x per magazine is higher therefore higher price per magazine

Aw Shucks, BB, i didnt know you cared! Thanks though.
And i think some of Lec 's ideas good and i have even sent proposals about a couple of those very things in the past but sadly Eventing mag doesnt want a thing to do with me, even to write event reports!! I actuallly dont buy it any more anyway ( though i may have a photo credit in the current one) because its dull. I think that more time could be spent on the grass roots riders, they fund the rest of the sport after all. I think Ellie works really hard though but as a magazine with such a limited circulation there needs to be lots of advertising to mke it pay and that limits space.

ellie hughes works really hard on the magazine but it becomes repititive and exceptionally boring to have three quaters of the magazine written and compiled soley by her. March's edition is the first in about 2 years that hasnt had 10 articles written by her (not to mention another 20 reports.) she is a good journalist but she appears to have run out of steam and run dry of ideas - which makes reading the same style of writing time and time again tiresome. varitey is what is needed

Hi, I buy the magazine on and off mainly due to the reasons mentioned above - same topics somewhere else I have already read or just not enough to get the value for money. Being an inspiring coach I wonder whether it would be possible to include information/articles/news from the Eventing coaching world. I have just returned from Interantional Eventing Forum in Addington and thought some parts gave me food for thought and consider a long trip worthwhile. It would be great to read about what British Eventing accredited coaches have in their agenda, whether they top up their knowledge (and if where?), how they got to the teaching side of things etc.
Thanks for reading, sorry some parts slightly off topic
