Am interested in a horse for my son to event that last evented in 04 as a 7 yrd old - did 2 intros, first one got 35 in dressage, 24 sj faults and retired xc, 2nd 32 dressage and clear sj, xc and and was placed. Worth a look?

depends how much the horse is and what level your son wants to event at?
what has the horse done 05 and 06?

difficult to say without seeing the horse or knowing more details but my initial reaction would be a no.

Dressage mainly (scoring 70-75% in prelim and high 60s in Novice) and my son will be 16 in June so obviously wants to do the lot

I think its very hard, not being at the first event and seeing the problems.
I mean, it can obviously do it because it was placed and clear at the 2nd event. I do find it rather unfair that from one blip on a record that we all go Oooo its got an E on it record or an R or it had 20 pen in the SJ or was a plus 40 in the dressage....
The dressage is there if its scoring 60-70% at P an N dressage.
Has it done any SJing since 2004? or been hunting at all?
I would personally say, it really can only be sold as a dressage horse if thats what its done in the past 2 years. If you are interested in buying as an eventer I would want to ride it around a course of SJs at a venue rather than at home, and take it xc schooling to see what reaction you get.

Thanks - its been jumped at home by a young girl as the owner is older and prefers dressage. The owner was extremely honest and told me loads of stuff about the horse, i'm reluctant to post the link as I've already made contact.

No good point, i wouldnt post the link.
Well I would go and see and if they get on well try and take the horse to a few comps or hire a venue and see what its like. I take it because your son is 16 he will be wanting to try JRN?

Yes but this is new to us, we've just done unaffiliated stuff so far and are taking lots of advice from his instructor who events herself and will be coming to tryout horses with us.

Even better. Your instructor should be able to point you in the right direction. Was this horse being sold via your trainer? or is this an independant and youve found it but trainer is coming to view it with you?

Dont put too much on a horses track record. As we know they are not machines. Go and see it and find out for your self what its like in the three phases.

if your son is wanting to do JRN i would prefer to get a horse that has been out eventing '06, even if its just round PN with the ability to go Novice, but thats my opnion

No I agree with you and that is really the plan but this one just caught my eye! Just as well we have our instructor as I'm rubbish

Thanks - I think we will go we need to see different horses to get a proper idea of what is most suitable, I'm just very conscious of all the timewaster posts and don't want to be one
