I'm looking into giving eventing a go this year. I haven't done this for about 12 years and dressage pony has never seen xc jumps so aim is to try a be80 or equivalent at end of the season.

We are happily showjumping 80 and are at Elem dressage.

She has shoes in front but bare behind. Would you stud in front? Or just leave?

We are going xc schooling for the first time in a couple weeks. Any tips?

I'm going to borrow my friends skull and body protector but any recommendations for new/second hand. I currently ride in a gatehouse Chelsea and I am a size 10 (quite short) I don't have any shops nearby that stock bps.

Any advice on what first event to choose. Would you choose A be event or local rc event

Don't stud if you don't have back shoes.

Enjoy your XC, don't push the first time let him enjoy his first time.

Get the hat which fits you, most decent hats are all the same price. BP the Rodney Powell is very nice and fits well.

I would pick some where that runs BE events but it is there unaffiliated event. You will then get a good quality course without having to pay extra for BE membership. Then if you continue eventing then look into day or full membership.

Most of all enjoy eventing and don't bet your self up if the first day does not go to plan :)

I agree, I wouldn't use studs.

When you go xc start with jumps that you can approach in walk and trot and make use of your escort, its all about confidence tackling the different types of xc jumps, not height.

I like racesafe body protectors, if you plan to do BE make sure you buy a hat and bp that meet the regulations. You can do as many BE80's in a season on a ticket so no need to pay for full membership.

I would also choose an unaffiliated event that runs over a BE course as your first one. I see you are in Scotland, not sure which area you are in, but Forgandenny, Burgie and Kirriemuir are the ones I know that run an unaffiliated event and also run affiliated. All nice courses.

Good luck and hope you have a blast :)

I would personally do a unaffiliated event first-a lot cheaper that BE once you have brought membership, training passes ect. The entries are cheaper to. Just to see if she will event (don't mean to be rude) A lot of events do a UA one the next day over the same course. Don't stud in back. do a lot of trot over ditches, steps, banks. Choose a nice rhythm. Not much technical stuff at 80 so don't try anything to hard :)

Racesafe for BP - I had mine fitted on a trade stand at an event and then ordered at a later date as was a custom size, if you're out and about anywhere you might fall lucky

Borrowing safety equipment is not the best idea. I can understand not wanting to splash out loads of money for something you might not continue with, but a borrowed hat and BP will never protect you as well as something correctly fitted for you. With second hand equipment you can never know if it has already been involved in a fall and so rendered useless. I know new equipment is expensive - but safety equipment which fails can be life changing, if not fatal.
