Hi

I'm new to this part of the forum so hope you don't mind me joining in.

I am currently looking for a stallion for my 15.2 TB mare.

I would like to breed an eventing type, hopefully able to compete at intermediate level.

The only parts of my mare that I would like to improve would be her height (ideally I need something about 16.1/16.2) and her feet aren't the best.

My list of prospective dad's so far is:

Catherston Liberator
Welton Double Cracker
Welton Ambassador
Primmore's Pioneer
Godington Hannibal

If anyone could offer their opinions on these guys (and ay others) it would be very much appreciated.

My first question would be what is her temperament like as quite a few of the stallions you've listed are known for being quite sharp/throwing sharp stock.
 
All in all her temperment is pretty good. She is not at all mareish and is a lovely person to have around. She's a lively ride, a little sharp on occasions but nothing too bad. Have had her from a 3 year old and she is a very keen, quick learner and enjoyed doing new things. Moves nicely on the flat and has quite a big, careful jump.

Unfortunately her career was cut short due to injury and she is now fully retired at the grand old age of 8. (must mention that my vet has advised that none of her injuries would cause a problem in her having a foal and nor would it be hereditary).

I don't generally mind sharp horses, as long as they're not totally insane!

Get a copy of eventing magazine you will be spoilt for choice!! Also what one person might recommend might not be right for you? I love welton horses though! One of the original 4* horses at our yard retired and he is still quality!
 
Look on SHB(GB) for graded stallions my own Weston Justice is on there he went to 3star and so nearly completed Burghley in 2004 when conditions were horendious. SallyF has 2 real quality TB stallions although not the size you are looking at, have plenty of size in their lines and she like me trys to go for temperment and ridability. She is on the move at the moment but you could pm her for their deatails.
 
Hi, I'm new too and thought I'd reply as I've owned a Catherston pony and ridden several Welton horses!
My Catherston pony was a real character, very cheeky with gallons of potential however his attitude was quite bad sometimes and I've heard from friends and so on that they are late maturers however if you want a horse thats got perfect conformation and a lot of dressage potential they are a good way to go.
I have recently had a foal by the Fleetwater Opposition line out of my 16.1hh TB mare who was frankly pretty mundane in the Dressage arena but we did intermediate level BE due to her fantastic jumping ability. Rocco's sired by Eutopian Opposition and I must say at 18 months old he is absolutely fabulous. He has the most well mannered and ameniable nature for a youngster, is very well put together and has shown already his naturally balanced, big paces which Im thrilled about as I hope to event him!
Eutopian opposition is notorious for throwing big foals as well and even though both Rocco's sire and Dam are 16.1hh the vet has estimated that he will grow to atleast 17hh if not bigger - which scares me slightly!
Just an idea but I fully recommend the Opposition horses if you are aiming for a high quality sports horse.

As an amateur Catherston horses really put me off as I think they are professionals horses. They seem to be pretty sharp and a bit quirky. I think its no surprise that Harry Meade has gained a reputation for dealing with them well.

Some of the SHB TBs have size on their side. For instance just as an example Weld is 16.3hh. I like big horses and all have been from SHB stallions.

Another Stallion whose stock I have been very impressed with is Rantis Diamond. He is ISH and 16.3hh I think would make a good mix with a pure TB mare. I have seen one of his sons near me and its such a bold, good looking horse. Won 6yo PAVO class at SLM.

I saw a Goddington Hannibal mare out competing and she was a tricky minx but when she stopped fooling around had incredible ability.
 
The oppositions horses are generally talented but can be very temperamental and not always the best conformation, they are normally HUGE or ickle...

Weston Justice would be top of my list, closely followed by an Opposition stallion but you do have to accept that not everyone can cope with an Opposition baby
 
Totally agree about some of the opposition offspring being sharp however thats why I chose Utopian rather than Fleetwater opposition to cover my mare because when I visited went to see him he had a very calm, quiet temprament different to Fleetwater Opposition but had retained all of the ability of the Opposition line.

Actually, most Oppositions are very laid back characters, they just dont suffer fools gladly and you cant tell them what to do. You have to pick your moments!!

I dont like Utopian as much as Tyke and Future Illusion but he has produced some decent eventers
 
Thanks for all your replies. Still don't know who to go for! Sooo hard to choose. Also quite like Catherston Dazzler so adding him to the list. Have a feeling the list is going to keep growing....
 
Have a look at Axis and Tycoon at Bluewood stud www.trakehners.co.uk
Tycoon already has a daughter eventing at advanced, and has a super jumping pedigree but is an incredible mover, and passes the movement on.
Axis too has a very strong jumping pedigree but is competing advanced dressage this season. He really passes his jump onto his offspring as well as superb looks.

I have to agree with what Lec said about Catherston stallions. However, much as I didn't like working with C.Liberator, I could never deny that his stock do seem to have lovely temperaments and are very trainable and athletic. C.Dazzler's stock can be very tricky, but O so tallented if you can get them on side - Dazzler himself is one of my favourite stallions, I loved working with him, he's such a character! With a mare with the right temperament, I wouldn't hesitate to breed to him!

Afraid I'm another one who is not that fond of the Welton stallions atm - loved Crackerjack though!!

What about Stravinsky? He's a dressage stallion, but is full TB!! I've heard nothing but praise for him on here, though not seen him myself, but would like to!

sorry i dontt think its possible 2get shaab semen anymore as i dont think they froze any of his semen before he died. primmores pioneer is a lovely stallion to deal with and has a good mind in my experience as well as Edward Bleekman being a very experienced stud man, however not a fan of many of the horses on your list.
 
i would not know about when he was in work but on the ground to handle now he has v.gd manners, plus you must question how stallions were treated in competition yards compared to studs.

How about Grannex i have a 3year old by him and he has a lovely kind temperament and Lucy Wiegersma's Granntevka Prince has done v.well being placed on the world breeding champs
 
Also I know they froze Rovirus semen.
I have come across quite a few of his offsrping from a variety of mare types.
His offspring can be quirky to deal with both ridden and off the ground but they are very clever animals you just need to ge ton the right side of them

Out of curiosity has anyone else had any dealings with his offspring? what are your thoughts as am considering using his frozen semen at some point

If you're interested in Jumbo offspring, you should consider Med Night Mahout.

He's an Intermediate eventer (only 2 points off Advanced) and a truly super horse, with the most lovely calm temperament. A very nicely-made, compact sort, with good paces and a terrific jump. But I'd say his outstanding quality is his excellent temperament, which he seems always to pass on to his offspring.

I don't own him or have any vested interest, by the way, I just know him well cos he stands alongside my stallion at Cliveden Stud. As just one example of his good nature, they use him to tease my stallion's mares, although 'Hootie' is the senior stallion, cos my boy gets wound up and over-excited, whereas Hootie takes it all calmly in his stride. A real gentleman!

Or theres Jetset by Jumbo. Perhaps Im biased as I have actually had the pleasure of riding Jumbo, but he has the nicest temperament ever. A real softie. My friend now owns jetset and has bred some lovely foalies from him. Can give you her details if you like.
