I've just re-read the thread on Exo Cage body protectors, as I am going to get measured for one on Saturday, and there were a few comments about the weight of the Exo Cage.

Just wondered whether people would be prepared to share how much they weigh when eventing, with the size/build of their horse?

Bob is a 15.2hh TB with 8" bone, so what weight should I be aiming for when eventing him? I am 5'2" but unfortunately I am definitely "chunky" build not petite

i try to get myself down to below 10 stone (just me, on scales!), for a 15.2 tb gelding at Nov, a 16.3 tb mare at Nov this year, and in the past for a 16.3 tb x 1/4 id at Intermediate and 2* level. for my 16hh 7/8 tb x irish mare up to and including 3* level (old format), i starved myself down a bit more.
when we all had to carry 11 stone 11 (including all kit, tack etc) i never needed lead, used to use a gelpad if i needed an extra few lbs.
i'm 5'10 so it's a bit of an effort! (when i wasn't eventing i podged up to 11 stone 4!)
the old team gb site had the weights of all the team riders, some were quite surprising.

btw i think Castle of Love is quite a nice name!

14stone on a 3/4 tb with over 9inches of bone and a dipped back.. (could be 9 and a half or more but can't remember all that much).
I think fitness is more of an important thing, if I am not reasonably fit I find I get tired and don't help the horse.
Mine always pulls xc..and is very fast, I have no doubt less weight would be good for him, although it has yet to cause him problems.

at the mo I am carrying a little "holiday weight"

but I like to be about 10 stone when I am eventing - Merlin is a 16.2 tb type with 8" bone and he will be doing novices/1* next year (if he dosent try to commit suicide in the field). I am 5f6 so would probably be better off loosing a few more pounds to help him!

I'm 5'4 and *she goes to weigh herself*. Has the shock of her life as I weigh just under 7stone 1lb- however I do struggle to keep weight on

. Horses wise the smallest horse I have evented was a 15.1hh mare of unknown breeding but if she wasn't mostly tb i don't know what she was hehe! and the biggest was a personal fav of mine a very impressive 17.3hh 3/4tbx wbx id. Mind, he had the most fabulous character and wouldn't hurt a fly.

Well i'm 5'8" and about 10stone (generally under) and ride my 16.2 (measured as high withers but bum is about 15.3 at a push!!) at int/2** and he's a loon, I have very light saddle though, but he's 1/4 welsh cob!!! (decent bone but is actually quite narrow)

edited as I can't type

Thank you

- people at the yard keep teasing me about it though

Bobblestock just struck me as a really silly name, it would have suited him

Oh gosh you are all really light

I am planning to aim for about 91/2 stone by next season, hope that will be OK for him! Although I will have been XC schooling and done some hunter trials before we event I hope, so that should give me some indication I suppose.

I'm only doing Intro and PN BTW

im 5'4, weigh 8 stone and event a 16.1 tbx shire. If im honest i could do with being 1 or 2 stone heavier to ride him as he is built like a brick house and is bloody strong when he wants to be but im quite happy with my weight atm so wont be eating anymore pies
tongue.gif

all really light my foot! Though that would be nice

Don't think for a moment you will have any issue on the weight front.

Thats good to know
smile.gif
Although being a complete idiot I hadnt realised that he had to carry 12 stone when he point to pointed - no wonder he didnt do very well
shocked.gif

I am not even going to think about sharing how much I weigh now of course, but a concerted effort is being made... 1/2 stone lost so far
grin.gif

I am just under 9 stone and 5'10 - eventing on a 15.3hh very lightweight TB mare I feel just about right weight wise, wouldn't want to be any more considering how fine she is and that I am tall on her as it is.

When I was eventing ferd 16.1hh IDxTB type - fairly middleweight, I was about 8 1/2 stone and 5'10 - could have probably done with the extra half a stone to get the brakes to work a bit better!

Well I am 11 stone regardless of what I do, Hen could carry me easily if I weighed a few more stone, but Eric will (in theroy!) be evented with all 6ft 11 stone of me squidged on top, plus his tack, and he is only 16hh ish with not alot of bone!
The way I see it, he was hurdling with 11 stone of bloke on, I'm sure he will be fine!

He will be absolutely fine with u on top!! If he's happy so far then he'll be more than happy when ur competeing

I think fitness is far more important than weight. I know when I am fit I ride better and I get results.

When u are fitter your body position is better as you have stronger muscles and can carry urself more. Also if you have a strong horse (like i do!) it helps greatly. It will also increase your balance and reactions.

If I was you id would aim to do work on ur fitness 3 times a week and by the start of the season you will feel the difference! If you dont fancy the gym or if u do, id say go for walking then moving towards running by use of interval training. Then once you can run about 5k dont run any further just try to beat ur time and/or start running on a slope. That way it takes less time and still increases ur cardio fitness, which i find is most important for me to ride well.

Horses can carry weight generally....Do you think william fox pitt is under ten stone?!! Your horse needs to know when u are onboard! :O)

Oh and I am 5'7 weight at the moment 10stone (even when running alot lighest has been about 9 '6 ) and I have a 16hh TB x CD and i have no idea what bone he has but he is a MW huner and he could easily hunt with a mans weight.

A - I have a 15.3 TB mare with about 8" of bone. I am about 8 and a half stone, but my OH has intro'ed her and he is just under 13 st. They completed full of running. I will post a pic (he really looks fine on her)...

6ft 11?! I knew you were tall but crikey

I weigh about 10.5stone when eventing. G is a 16.2hh relatively narrow but with a bit of bone ISH
smile.gif
I will try and go lighter next year, but only for me, not him!!

I beat you all! I'm, give or take, 6ft and at the moment about 11.5 stone. I try to be below 11 for eventing but i think it's what you do with your weight that's most important. We've all seen small people who ride very heavily and big people who ride lightly.
My current horse is 17hh-ish half carthorse. I was muttering about lighter saddles etc. the other day and my husband said 'that horse doesn't need to carry less weight, he needs about 2 stone of lead as well as you'! I can kind of see his point!
Conversely I have also evented a 15hh flat-bred TB (but she will have carried at least 11st7 when she was pointing).

Excuse the fact that I'm about a county ahead of her, but she doesn't really look like her back is breaking! She was also the 2nd fastest horse round the XC that day and could have gone round again without puffing.

I'm 15 and 5"3 [just]. I ride a 16.3 ID X TB with 8 1/4" bone [sig horse], and a 16.3 ISH with clover hill lines - slightly finer than my grey, but 16.3 all over where was my grey is a bit "withery".
I'm currently 8 1/2 - 9 stone [depressing seeing as most of you weigh less than me!] BUT I do have quite solid thighs and muscle weighs more than fat, and to make me feel less fat...I'm a 24size jod
grin.gif
[now I feel better
grin.gif
...not saying that you guys are fat...oh dear.... *hides in a corner*] My boys are doing PN / Novice eventing, and BSJA up to 1.15m and coping fine.
I also ride a 14.1 connemara x tb who's quite slight, evented him intro this year, was going to go PN but event was cancelled. He's BSJA'd up to 1.10m with me no problems. HOWEVER I do sometimes think I should carry a little less with him, but at a 30F, someone once said to me "L, most of yours [weight] is t*ts!" so I figure I can't really do much about it!!

I'm 5'3" and weigh about 8 stone, riding two 16h full TBs. I'd like to point out that I get yanked out of the saddle quite a bit by one of them and it would be nice to have a bit more say so with him... Both get ridden by my OH as well who is 6'1" and weighs 12 stone and they manage fine with him (and he yanks back so gets a nicer ride than I do).

Im 5.10 ride a 16.1hh TB and intro and PN and im 11stone (there abouts) would like to be less but never seems to weigh less even when my clothes get too big.... to be honest - my Mums old horse used to chase at 12 stone - at home he was ridden by a chap of similar weight - he is 24 now and still doesnt have a dipped back and having broke 4 course and distance records - which he still holds
- I think we need to worry less about weight and more on fitness...
If I were a horse id rather carry 12 stone of "helpful" weight than a 10 stone blob...

Acolyte, Dont worry at all. I think anything under 11 stone will be very easy for your horse. I am 5'4" & weigh just under 10 stone but my horse is 17hh WB x TB so not really an issue. But my OH weighs 12 stone & has evented a 15.2hh (quite sturdy though) & a lightweight 16.1hh.

If you follow racing, think about some of the smaller NH horses, such as Katchit (who won the Champion Hurdle) he is absolutely tiny & won the Champion Hurdle carrying 11stone 10 & that is going flat out for 2 miles.

OK, have I convinced you............... really, honestly weight is not an issue. Although dont let that put you off a planned fitness campaign!!!!

Crikey I feel really fat now. I'm 5'5" (ish) and weigh 9 1/2 stone - everyone says I'm quite slim so I didn't worry too much before reading all of these posts
blush.gif
. Must be all that muscle I have (according to Talavera - def. not the boobs anyway...!)
wink.gif

I ride a 16.1hh Irish X with a reasonable amount of bone and a 16hh skinny TB. Don't think I look out of place on either.

I have to agree with Gamebird and EMS207 - I don't think it's so much about how much you weigh but how you ride/carry yourself. There are some very chunky people who ride very lightly and some very slight ones who ride heavily.

*Toddles off to the gym*

I am 5ft 5 and pre having kids I weighed just under 9 stone. Post kids I now weigh 10 stone and compete on the same 16hh2 llightweight thoroughbred. I don't think the extra stone has made any difference to how ed goes. As long as you are not too heavy I don't think weight is a huge factor but more how light you are in the saddle.

I'm usually about 10.5 stone. I'm 6ft tall so quite long and lean! Horse is 16.3, 1/2 tb 1/2 native with 10.5" bone. Competing at BE Novice. I have started to wonder about saddles as his jump saddle is quite heavy, but as he could probably carry 2 of me round a novice track I don't think I'll worry too much for the moment!
