As a rider my perception of safety has changed as time has passed and I've got older. I was invincible back when I started, despite broken bones and evidence ot the contrary. (!)
Then came the dreadful deaths of friends eventing in the 90s and I re evaluate my career to some extent.
I would say that now the courses are "technically" safer but also much more technical and think the questions asked make them more dangerous, in a different way. That and the style of riding and training they encourage.
This last season, with deaths and life changing injury has really brought that into focus.
