Eventual Adult Height of a new born foal?

the mare is 11.2hh grey welsh type father unknown, possibly a gypsy cob, foal was born weighing 36kg and big compared to mum! he's a little skewbald now 5 days old...

the measurement from middle of knee to coronet is 10" ... he has to spray legs and stand back to suckle as he's a bit too tall!!

By the end of the first year of life, the cannon bone has reached its maximum length.
The distance from the middle of the knee to the ground is 30% of the mature horse’s wither height, and that measurement is one least effected by how the horse is fed and maintained. There are formulas for relating the measurements of just about every bone to the ultimate height:
The head is 36 to 40% of the wither height,
the elbow to the ground is 60%of the wither height,
and the hock to the ground is 40%of the wither height.

Well that would suggest that he is going to make around 10hh - are you sure you measured it correctly?

Generally this string test works at any age of the foal/horse.....but not always LOL!!

well ive got five gees, ive measured all of them four of them being fully grown, the measurement is correct.
I measured my younster when he was about 7 months old the measurment was 16.5 " so he should make 16.2hh i havent measured him since, i will do it again tonight and see if its the same

Her mother is 12.2hh and her father is 15hh (he's the coloured on the right). She is quite a decent sized foal and has grown quite a lot in the past month. I'm thinking that mine will likely grow to about 13.2hh/14hh however I haven't done the string test yet.

I think your little foal is a nice size but not a big foal by any means. If you look at the picture where you can see the front legs of the mare and the foal then you will see that the foal has a shorter area from knee to coronet band so I think your string test could well be right and that the foal may only make 10hh; especially if the mare is only 11.2hh. Whatever size, cute little foal

.

What size was the stallion?

we dont know who the dad was, mare was almost a rescue case, all skin and bone, her owner thought her belly was worms turnt out she was in foal and shes only a baby herself being just 3 this year... turns out her first owners were panacur... and she has numbers marked on her back but not freezemarked, we think she may have been tested on but not really sure, why else would panacur own a pony?!

I once heard that if you measure the front leg up to the elbow and double it this will be an approx height of when it matures.

Dunno how true that is though.

i should also say the mare and the foal are not mine but a friends and im just posting to see if anyone knew about eventual size as we were all curiuos!
