I guess we have all had some injuries relating to horses, but I was wondering how common seriously incapacitating injuries are amongst us.

So far, my most serious injury was being bucked off at gallop, landing on my head and being unconscious for 20 minutes. I had a bad neck for two years afterwards and had to have physio for months. But not too serious.

I think when one is brought up in an environment with many horses around you do tend to learn very quickly at a young age to always keep your wits about you. In a lifetime I've had a few minor equine-related injuries but none have been serious.

Never had any serious injuries *touch wood*. But when i was doing a riding lesson a few years ago i came of the pony twice in about 10 minutes:rolleyes:. (just one of those days eh) 1st time i was fine and just got back in the saddle,as they say. 2nd fall though got some pretty impressive scrapes and bruises and had the wind stuffed out of me, had a *cant breathe* moment, but probably wouldnt of got them had i worn a body protector. (so stupid) Now i wear one every time i ride.

Very true! Mind you, I've clocked up quite a few near misses. It doesn't bear thinking about all the 'what might have happened'.

As a child (maybe 12 yrs) I was helping at the riding school leading a pony behind another one when it kicked out and caught me on my hip bone - it's still lumpy 30 years on.

As a young adult I was bucked off my horse and slid along the grass on my face - I had a black eye, fat nose and fat lip together with lots of scrapes. I was a receptionist for BT at the time and had to work in the back office doing filing for about 3 weeks!

When I was 13 I was riding the smallest pony in the school - only 11hh. We were cantering and he swerved around a clump of nettles and I came off and fractured my left wrist. I had to start a new school a week or so later with it in plaster!

Plus, lots of toes trodden on, bitten , knocked over etc - just the usual.

Nutjob TB with a screw loose chucked me on the floor resulting in me tearing a major muscle in my back - that was no fun. Nor was coming off Kal and breaking two ribs.

In addition, I've been bitten, kicked, nutted (by Kal on Sunday - I was going to give him a cuddle, he shook his head to get rid of a fly and the pointiest part of his cheekbone caught me just above my right eye - I am sporting a black eye), stepped on, shoved . . . all the usual stuff really.

All part of the fun, eh?

P

I have had a dislocated hip, broken collar bone, broken jaw, all my bottom teeth pushed back under my tounge, front tooth knocked out and 3 back teeth shattered. Also had a horse climb up the back of my leg whilst wearing soft ground grass studs and ripped open my calf muscle!!!!!

My falls have never caused any serious injuries, but rather long lasting pain. I'm only 21 and I have constant knee, back and ankle pain. Sometimes it's worse, some days it barely hurts at all.

Funny, that was exactly what I was going to follow on by saying but then I was distracted and posted as-is. I also have had many many near misses, some could have been catastrophic to my person but thankfully "what might have happened" never did :)

Sprained ankle quite badly falling off- horse refused a fence, I landed (almost) on my feet at the other side.

Another time as a kid I went on a riding holiday to a lovely yard in the south of England (funnily enough saw the same place for sale in the back of a magazine a couple of years ago). Was saying hi to all the ponies when one, without warning, clamped its jaw around my upper arm.. had to give it a few slaps before it let go, leaving me with a very impressive bruise! Got a bit of a lumpy arm from it!

Ruptured disc at 15yrs requiring a plaster cast for 6 weeks and ongoing chiro work - horse fell at speed on tar seal after bolting from a double decker bus.

Dislocated knee, kicked in the side of the knee by a broodmare - requiring chip surgery, and 6months off work - now feeling the long term after effects.

8 stitches in my head when the horse I was clipping reared up and spun coming down on my head - didn't drop the clippers though!

Both shoulders disclocated - one from a fall and one from a horse I was leading rearing up and clipping my shoulder on the way down.

Stood on by a pony - of all things - developed a Mortons Neuroma on one of the nerves which had to be removed by surgery.

One cracked rib following a horse falling in the arena. Avoiding a **** rider who forgot his arena manners.

Smacked in the head by my mare rearing - brat threw her head up as I leant forward, CAT scan and two weeks concussion and eyesight permenantly damaged by impact.

Not had that many falls over 45years - self preservation very strong. Most of my serious injuries have been while on the ground.

But one bonus, leading horses down to paddock when one flung its head up and away from me clicking my stroppy elbow back into line. Pain free instantly.

Yes to 2, 3 and 4. Ticked 4 as have twice been injured and needed several weeks off work. First time was broken clavicle, which needed operating on to pin it in place, but I was self employed at the time so couldn't afford to take more than a couple of days off work.

Second time was broken fibula. Again needed an operation to pin and plate it. Signed off work for 7 weeks. I was working full time then, but as it was a small business I got called back to work after a week as they couldn't cope without me (a kind of indirect compliment I suppose) and mine's the kind of role that you can't bring a temp in to cover.

dislocated jaw, broken ankle, broken wrist, broken fingers, torn ligaments, torn muscle, bruised bone, pulled ligaments, dislocated hip, dislocated shoulder, concution and a hell of a lot of bruises... im 17 years old haha im doing well

Concussion many many many times.
Fractured skull - was riding my old TB mare on the beach and we were only walking when she tripped and fell. Falling like a stone springs to mind!
Broken little finger... I dismounted gracefully and got my finger caught in the mane!

Those are my worst, each took a few days to a week or two before I was back.
Us riders are made of stern stuff!

Ive had a broken wrist, been stood on on my ankle (took months for the muscle to come back), been kicked on my leg, currently have bruised calf & leg hurts first thing in the morning. Oh and a black eye when horse was eating I stupidly stood in front of him and he moved his head and hit my face.

Dragged from the stirrup when I was 10 - stupid child that I was I was riding in trainers with no hat - 6 stitches required in my head, broken collar bone and a strapped up leg . 30+ years later now have bad arthritis in that ankle.

Broke the other collar bone later that same year, fell off awkwardly.

Broken toes and fingers, more than I can count. Same with bruises.

The injury that has really affected my riding was a simple slip on a wet floor that
caused a slipped disc that never really went back properly...

does a bear $hit in the woods??:D
feet stood on countless times small toenail now falls off regularly:eek: and right big toe has lumpy painful joint, rope burns from trying to lead too many arsey ponies at once, dislocated shoulder from going over a jump head first, gash behind ear from being trampled by runaway TB, scar on elbow from tarmac surfing:rolleyes: and countless bruises from unplanned dismounts:o

I've had quite a few. Lots of bruises, including being bucked off onto a fence and breaking the fence!  I've fell ofd and got knocked out and spent the night in hospital with concussion. And, most recently I got kicked in the head and had a massive black eye (and now have a scar!)

Broken finger lungeing
Broken toe stood on
Busted both shoulder ligaments one when horse reared and sucked me under, landing on me, the other in a spectacular dismount, shot into the ground like a missile
Smashed tooth,by horse head but
Booted a few times. One resulting in stitches

Recent (actually 6 months ago now!) was galloping and pony tripped and flipped. Resulted in multiple breaks to my collar bone, concussion for over a week and a punctured lung. 14 pins, 2 plates and a bone graft later and i'm stuck back together. It's been 6 months and i'm still not on my girly, I will have to wait until at LEAST December until I'm allowed to ride again. Currently I only have 40% use in my right arm, they are hoping this will increase but nobody is sure.

Previous to that I broke my left collar bone whilst hunting, I never came off or had an awkward moment so not sure how that happened to this day! Recovered to 99% use.

Broke my wrist in a silly fall off my old tb. Had it in plaster for 8 weeks.
Ditched by pony I had just backed for someone resulting in 2 black eyes and half of myface swollen to melon resemblence.
Kicked by tb at work on thigh, still have a hoof print a year on.
Bitten by horse on face, can still see tooth marks above eye brow and feel the ones on the top of my head!

Horses ey...who'd have em?

Broken finger and broken foot after a horrible storm and rushing in horses from the field and two horses stood/reared on the exact same part of my foot within 2 minutes, talk about unlucky! Oh and the dead leg I got when I was going cross country on a young pony and he decided the planks were far too scary to jump, even though he'd already taken off so the two top planks landed on my leg. At least I didn't break it! :D

I have however acquired Degenerative Disc Disease, the blame being put on riding and numerous falls as a kid :P Well numerous falls as an adult too, I tend to chuck myself off at any chance I get :) Oh and several incidents of concussion, once on a hack where I fell off whilst jumping, all I can remember is standing, wiping blood from somewhere and re-mounting. Apparently we went for a couple more gallops and did a couple more jumps, I was still riding when my mind 'came back' and I remember trying to work out the day and what horse I was riding! :P

I've fractured my skull twice, (yes I had a skull cap on both times.) and had a compartment syndrome in my right leg... both of which put me out of things for some time.

BnBx

toes squashed.
fallen off too many times, now got scoliocis in neck and arthritis (am only 38!!!)
kicked resulting in permanent haematoma (sp?)
horse and i fell into ditch out hunting (hurt pride and wet)
dragged into dry stone wall (had to pay for it to be rebuilt)
That's it! Im still alive and still LURVE riding, I'll carry on until i physically cannot do it anymore.

a horse at work reared up and struck out with front foot hit me on top of my head she had shoes on very painfull massive lump instantly ouch

grooming at a dressage show for old boss in trainers lol just before i took the horse to warm up he stood on my toe (not really his fault) and three quarters tore my nail out of my big toe had to finish show with very sore toe lots of blood etc hopping around like i donut.

the list is endless lol thankfully nothing to major YET lol
