Was wandering if many have you have experienced what my mare did last nite. I had bought her a new companion (mini horse) as she pops over the hedges, fences, gates if she's left by herself. He is only a weanling and a mini colt and when i brought him home i put him in the american barn to run up&down the aisle so they could touch and smell with his stable door open. She went MAD in a good way! whinneying, whickering, squealing at him and licking him, just like a mare would do with her OWN foal. I havent turned them out as we have the monsoon but when i went to feed this morning he was lying on the hay under her door as if between her front legs!!! any similar experiences, or have i cause to worry?!

Sounds like she's a bit broody! I've never let my mares as close as that to a foal, but they have had foals in the field next door to them, who have escaped into their field. They've always tried to adopt them.

I don't think it's anything to worry about, exactly, but if they get attached, you could have separation problems. Purely from the "emotional" point of view, I would be concerned. Health wise, I think she's behaving perfectly normally, and at least you know she'd be a good mum if you ever breed from her.

My friends mare went a bit like that over a 10 2 welshie. He was about 4 or five so not really a baby but I think she just wanted to take him home with her.
