Has anyone been pulled over while towing or driving an horsebox? Where you travelling legally or a little over weight, or without the correct liesence? What did the police do? call the yard the collect the horses?

Just woundering as talking to a highway copper friend of mine and he said that unless someone is driving a trailier or horsebox in a life treatening manner, then he's been told not to pull them over and just let them get on with it, as its to much hassle and to much paperwork.

Just wondering if anyone has any stories and outcomes

Depends which police force!

However, if to do with weights, transporting other peoples horses this all falls with VOSA who impound the lorry trailer and you have to sort out getting neds home!

Passports of course just are trading standards-again varies from council to council! Seen them impound a lorry and were going to do the on the spot fine of £5000 for no passport on the lorry, when luckily OH came with passport.

The police have a tough job-however, if driving with wrong licence you are therefore not insured. Should a Traffic Cop pull over said vehicle and did not do anything about it and said vehicle later on has an RTA-don't think the Public would endear to this lightly!

im talking about say the vechile has insurance for example say with your mum, and your a named driver, or its your own but not a trailer test, so you wouldnt get pulled over for a straight forward no insurance, they would have to stop you and speak to you to find out the correct information
Does that make sense?

Have replied in CR however it seems you are asking that you are driving with your mother and you do not have your trailer test, the chances are fully yes if VOSA are involved as they are very very hot on it at the moment. The police possibly not unless you are driving badly or it flashes up on their computer that something is wrong.

Also your mother has to now have the current qualifications to be sat with you in the passenger seat, so it is worth checking the websites out. If in doubt at all check it out fully, can you afford to lose your car and trailer? Its not worth the risk.

when i do get transport in time, it will be 100% within the law, my job requires a full clean standard driving liesense, so it would be really silly of me to lose my job over something so daft. Just thought it a bit... well dangerous if police forces arent checking and pointless in the law.
How do VOSA check you? do thay do patrols like the police or have checkk points at tolls and bridges etc, if its just check pointss then surely you could avoid them? And how about people going from a to b when its only a local trip say 5miles or so, using back roads and lanes?

VOSA are a government enforcement agency, they set up checkpoints wait for vehicles they are interested in and escort them to the checkpoint which often has a weighbridge, if you are found breaking regulations, or are unroadworthy your vehicle is impounded and you can be fined, how you get your horses home is your problem. They set up a checkpoint on the A23 last year not far from hickstead and were pulling horseboxes left, right and centre, going to and from the RIHS.

VOSA can also pull you over anywhere, not just at fixed posts. I know of people being checked on the road and at shows. personally I'm not surprised, I've walked down some lorry lines and thought they must be easy pickings for them! I think VOSA are more interested than the police, best to just stay legal if you ask me

i got stopped by police outside a competition venue while driving a 3 horse box, no reason - just cos they could, and I was asked to produce my documents at the police station within 7 days. No checking inside the lorry, a quick glance allround the lorry outside - nothing wrong - just produce my documents.

I was stopped a few years ago by vosa, had to go on weighbridge and although my overall weight was under (7.5tns) i had too much weight on the front axel. So i had to move stuff from living area into horse area. I didn't receive a fine just a written warning. Now i never carry anything i don't need and i don't just leave water tank full all the time.

I haven't ever (touch wood) been pulled over. I remember once though on the way to a show, I passed a police check point - I think they were just doing diesal checks. I didnt get pulled in but because my horse at the time was a total nutcase when I stopped (literally if I stopped, he wanted OUT!) - I actually drove home a different way purely to avoid it!! I dreaded the thought of being stopped with that horse (or being held up in traffic), the whole trailer would start rocking and if there for long enough he'd start to jump over the breast bar! NOT fun.
